Did my first oil change no tick. Also switched to 5w-30 synthetic oil and Ford racing 820 filter. Done at 1700 miles one year old oil change time.

You guys think switching to the "track use" 5w30 will bring down the oil consumption? Anyone do the PCM UPDATE that supposedly helps with the oil consumption?

Old thread but someone might find this interesting. My 1st engine had the tick after first oil change. Long story short I had my short block replaced under warranty for other reasons at 14k miles and I just had the oil changed at the dealership recently after break-in period at 1000 miles. Guess what... the tick appeared on the new engine too. Interesting thing is that on the new engine, I actually had the dealership technician start it out with FULL SYNTHETIC 5w30 and it ran beautifully and quiet during break in. Then on this oil change I had them use the same MC Full Synthetic 5w30 and the tick appeared, luckily it's not as constant or loud as it was on my first engine.
I'm curious what oil the dealership would have used if I didn't specifically request the full synthetic, a special break-in oil provided by Ford maybe? or just the normal MC 5w20 blend that's in the manual... I'm hoping as I drive it harder and put more miles on it the tick goes away, but as long as this engine doesn't consume oil I can live with the tick.

I just use 100ml of LiquiMoly Ceratec per oil change and no tick.

I put in Royal Purple on my first oil change. All good, no ticks

Can you post a video with the sound you’re hearing? I’m wanting to try to catalog a lot of these so that we can see if they may, in fact, be slightly different issues (BBQ tick vs. typewriter tick).

Here is the sound of mine - which compares well with everyone who has the “typewriter tick“.

That sounds awful. I know its not but the way it does it, sounds like the cvt slopping back and fourth.

Usually a first oil change, you're dropping all the break in heavy nickel or zinc oil out of an engine and ticks usually start because of cam bearing or cam lobe, which this is NOT. It's not lifter either, what a strange sound

Just did the same with Ford syn blend oil Change ( just got the car from Honda dealer, so wasn’t sure what oil)
I haven’t drove it yet, but it definitely quieted down things

Yea you don't need the whole bottle, 100ml is just a 1/3 of the bottle so its good for 3 oil changes.

That’s not what the container says , mine was the 10 oz one , says it treats up to like 5-6 quarts
The bottle is in the garage somewhere , I’d have to go look
I put in 7.75 ish quarts Of oil and the 10oz bottle
Right at the top of the checkered in my dipstick

I read a comment from a ford engineer that said the tick (bbq tick) was from lifter on #3 cylinder, as that's the oil's longest path in the engine. And with the engine hot at operating temp and idle low normal oil pressure drops to maybe 12psi and by the time it gets to lifter on #3 there's not enough pressure to keep it from leaking down. Take it for what it's worth.

Can you please tell us where you heard/read this? This is the first time in five years we have ever heard an actual reason for the tick.
