Some people dont even know its a mustang initially...........Ive actually heard "I thought it was a M6 at first" or "I thought it was a bentley GT at first" each once

I doubt the average person even recognizes it as a new Mustang. My dad can still spot the differences between every year of cars from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, but he'll send me a text saying he thinks he saw a new Mustang like mine, and it will be a '13 or '14.

This.

At least it's a late S197. My dad can't seem to tell the difference between any of the "new" Mustangs. He's constantly pointing out early S197s (2005-2009) and saying, "Look, there's a Mustang like yours." But this same man can spot a 65 Fastback 289 with a 4-Speed from a mile away with his back turned to it. (Okay, so maybe there's a little exaggeration there, but you get the point.)

People remember the cars they grew up with, the ones that stoked their love for cars. My Dad was the same way, and my father-in-law too.

Designers don't have quite the creative latitude of 50 years ago, with all the govt regs in place dictating safety and mpg. Cars have become more alike in some ways so it has been a challenge to keep things fresh while working inside of more narrow design parameters. I remember reading how Honda designed the front of the Accord to make a collision with pedestrians safer. I bet GM never gave '59 Caddy tail fins a second thought in regard to collisions, lol.

As a child growing up in the 50s, I knew every feature of every Ford car sold. I lived 2 blocks from the Ford dealership and knew when the new cars would arrive. I would get the glossy color brochures on each car and study them for hours. My father always bought the dealership owners' "demonstrater" car at the end of each model year...so we always had fairly new Fords. My absolute favorite was a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL black with red leather! I particularly remember the rollout for the original Pony Car. To this day I'm a Ford guy...and on my 10th Mustang.

Yeah I can remember how disappointed I was to find out my 1977 Pontiac Trans AM Black & Gold with a 400 CI engine only had 180 HP.

Yep. Everybody actually knows how many airbags there are in a 550 Mustang, right? ;)

And the "pedestrian bullets" on the front of a '56 Caddy. Or the "winglets" on the outer edges of the '57 Plymouth front bumper. Great for catchin' bicycles and legs when sittin' still.

That is all...

When I first got my GT one of my co-workers told me I should have bought something more "respectable" like a bmw lol! My car gets lots more respect in the wild than his A4 audi, he was fired the next month.

Back in August, my wife and I drove up to Portland to visit friends. When we finally arrived and parked in his driveway we were all catching up when his nineteen year old daughter comes home and says "Mustang? Why didn't you get a Tesla?" I told her the Tesla's a great car but they don't make a convertible version.

The next morning, I went up to her and said my car needs gas, let's go, you drive.
She gets in the car and I have her adjust the seat and mirrors and she's all bug eyed and stuff and I show her how to start the car without a key.

There's a cool factor associated with a vert that I've noticed when people are sitting in it and drop the top for the first time. Something about seeing that roof fold back is a jaw dropper for many, she was so excited she was literally quivering and when she went to back out of the driveway, she put the car in Drive and turned her head around to see where she was going. I said " Nat, even Tesla's need to be in reverse when you back out of a driveway" and calmly put the car in reverse and pointed out the eight inch reverse camera screen.

Long story short, she got to drive around in a convertable and show off to some friends and it was great fun for both of us. No more " why didn't you buy a Tesla" either.

You let a 19 year old girl drive your car! You brave man! lol.
Turns out, yea your right! Unbeknownst to me she had recently took her Moms car to the coast and totaled it late at night when she was supposed to be spending the night in town at a girlfriends house.

Kids, right? :-)
