I can accept modified cars blowing up, but when stock cars are doing it too, you know there's something wrong. The whole LSPI issue is crazy.
This. If Ford knows about the issue, they are foolish to not use the computer to limit torque in the risky situations. If Ford doesn't know about the situation, well, something is the matter in their product testing process. Neither seems acceptable and they better be pretty generous in replacing blown blocks.

LSPI has its own Wiki page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-speed_pre-ignition
LSPI is most common in certain turbocharged direct-injection vehicles operating in low-speed and high-load driving conditions

If the 2.3 is making 320 lb ft of torque, then an equivalent 5.0 would make 695 lb ft. What does a supercharged 5.0 make, 500 lb ft ? Ford is definitely squeezing a lot of power out of a small engine.

I have not seen many Ecoboost engine failure threads on this site. Maybe someone would have to look over the F150, Focus and Fiesta forums to see if there is more there.

I would think an F150 Ecoboost towing something heavy would be more prone to LSPI. Truck towing 5000 pounds is doing a lot more work than a car. Then again, the F150 are automatic transmissions, and it may be that the computer aggressively downshifts under load.

Like I said Mazda was having this issue as well in the speed 3s.....and they're a lighter car making much less power. Honestly most of the issues occurred when people modded them

I've towed some heavy stuff with my 3.5 ecoboost. I have a 12' 9990 gvw dump trailer. In tow/haul mode the tranny keeps the motor where it developes most power. It also helps with braking with downshifting. That little sumbitch does an excellent job of pulling weight.

I do agree that the car was beautiful enough to make me buy my first American branded car in 20+ years. Unfortunately the quality is a constant reminder of why I stopped buying them in the first place.

It's a shame you're feeling this way. I can attest being on my 3rd Ford in a row now they're quite well built cars. My 04' Mustang GT never faltered in my 5 years of ownership, and in that 5 years I autocrossed it every year, and took it on the road course 4 times while driving it daily. I spent a total of $200 in work on it above normal maintenance, that's it!!

Next was a 14' Fiesta ST, only had it for 15 months but was issue free aside from the perennial sync problems. Now I have a 15' GT with 6,500 miles or so and issue free so far.

Hopefully you won't let this one issue ruin things for you, despite some of what you may read here it's a pretty rare occurrence. Ford took care of you and hopefully you won't have any issues again.

Sorry to hear of your luck. I'm now very happy I gave back my allocation for a Ford Focus RS. I love the EB too.
I saw the RS at the Richmond auto show this weekend. It looks pretty sweet! The STI has some competition now, and I'm a fan of the current STI.

Sorry, just passing through. And now back to the ecoboost hate...

Nice post Zerobar. Me and wife have owned around thirty vehicles since meeting. Most are Fords. The most problematic vehicles we owned are the two Japanese cars. 05 Toyota Sienna. 12 Honda Pilot.

Given there was a recall, Subaru may be seeing more failures than they are comfortable with. I think the 2015 WRX is the first year of their DI Turbo. This is for ECM update and checking the spark plugs.

Unfortunately this was the forth time the car has been in the shop this year (turbo malfunction @ 2 months, passenger seat replaced, AC went out, and now the engine). In addition to the three recalls which I actually expected with it being the first year

The new engine is running great and is actually smoother than I remember especially in 5th and 6th gear. I would be curious if it's different than the old one in any way.

This brings me back to 2011 when 5.0's were popping the #8 lol. Glad you were taken care of!
(/sarcasm_on)No sorry, that can't be even remotely similar. This is an ecoboost only problem because they are crap. (/EndSnarkySarcasm)

I've owned an EcoBoost engine Ford before that never gave me any issues. No engine platform will have 0% failures. If it had, it would be economically nonviable as it would have been incredibly over-engineered.

What is considered a modification that will have Ford void the warranty? Will an oil catch can void the warranty? What about an air filter or CAI? Obviously, a tune does.

Really the only 'safe' mods will be suspension and cat back exhaust but it would void suspension and exhaust warranties. I doubt a catch can would cause any issues. But they could try and say a motor popped from running lean because of unmetered air through a 'faulty' catch can. I would not put it past some dealers to unhook the hose if they didn't want the warranty work. Not likely but possible.

I am hearing quite often about seat issues with the cooling/heating, features like those never last in any car really. Amongst others its one of the many reasons I stayed away from the premium, far less to go wrong.
Good that the engine is working well, Ford probably has made some changes though not that they have to divulge any info to us about it.
