Am I making the wrong decision? STI to GT

...I wanted the V8 crackle, instant torque, incredible interior, and basically bulletproof engine (compared to the EJ25) to mod and make big power. I'm scared i'll blow something in the subie.

I would keep the Subaru 'till spring, then switch cars... You won't blow anything up by driving mellow. Subaru makes great cars 'till they're overly abused.
BTW - "instant torque" isn't really what you need in nasty weather... ;)

Hah, I got the opportunity to drive a 2015 STI a couple weeks ago!

That car is pretty damn stellar!

Very good handling, easy to drive, nice clutch/shifter.

Power was decent! Sound...well it was pretty quiet lol.

Overall, I thought it was a nice car. If I didn't love Mustangs, that's the car I would be driving !

But, now that I've got my 15, I would take it all day over the Subaru.

It's really up to you.

Practicality, Noise preference, Ride quality, handling..

I think the Subaru might edge out the GT in the handling department , but that's because I've only experienced my GT on 38 PSI summers, in high 20s weather >.<

Drive both , go with your heart!

Hah, I got the opportunity to drive a 2015 STI a couple weeks ago!

That car is pretty damn stellar!

The 2015 STI carries over the EJ257, an engine designed back in 2004 and has been blowing up since around 2008 due to overly brittle pistons / ringlands. It also gets truck-like fuel economy, and there is a lot of turbo lag.

The rest of the STI itself is pretty good for what is essentially a hopped up econobox Impreza. It has a helical LSD up front, Torsen LSD rear, brake-based torque vectoring assist, a center differential that is driver-controlled and can be biased / locked. The transmission is basically bullet proof, the shifter is not cable-linked, steering is all hydraulic (I think), suspension is beefed up, etc.

Aside from the shitty EJ257 (and the lack of a hatchback), it is a very good choice as a daily driver. It won't beat a Mustang GT in terms of power or acceleration, but you cannot argue against AWD (plus winter tires) in the snow, nor the practicality of a hatchback vs a coupe.

In short... it's not a Mustang GT competitor, even if people do occasionally cross shop them based on performance and price.

The STI would dare I say wipe the floor with the stock gt. I'll miss having a car that's just so composed in corners, especially at high speeds, it makes me feel invincible. But I'm trading for reasons that overcome the others, so yeah. I hope I get the car soon :( Don't want to wait until February...

Funny how many people are picking between STI and GT.STI is great, and yes EJ is old but it has that old school charm. DIT is ok, but it's bit too clinical. I can't wait to compare GT-PP vs the STI for my final decision - we are not too lucky in Oz, maybe another 12+ month wait before we get GT here.

Have you driven a mustang yet? I was in your situation a few months ago, I had a 2013 Mazdaspeed 3 that I had for 11 months and traded it in for a GT. Something you need to think about are long term, if you plan on having kids in the near future then putting a baby seat in a 4dr is alot easier than a 2dr. I did notice that MPG is worse on the GT than it is on the Mazda even though they are rated the same according to EPA. How about weather conditions? I have had 4cyl turbos my whole life and the GT is my first V8, and it wont be my last. The drive ability on this is so much better than a 4cyl turbo, no more down shifting all the time to get the torque to go up a small hill, it rides smoother and the power is there! You may think the STi feels faster because once that turbo hits full boost it throws you back in the seat where the mustang is more smooth all the way to redline.

I have come to realize that you mustang owners think the mustang rules all, not true! The mustang is a great car, but believe it or not there are better cars out there. And I currently drive a 2015 GT btw...

The STI was on my short list. So was the WRX, the Challenger, the Camaro, the GTI (which I just came out of), and the Golf R. I chose the Mustang because I've owned several over my lifetime and it's hard to stay away from a V8. If you want to do burnouts buy the Mustang. If you want a great all around car stay with your STI. The Mustang has no back seat compared to the STI. The Mustang is a little more fun to drive. Both fun cars.

Come on. Sure there are better cars out there. However, performance wise, the STI is not one of them. Every test I've seen shows the mustang gt is the faster car.

Please explain how/when the 2015 STI will wipe the floor with a 2015 GT - outside of wet/snowy conditions.

It's slower in a straight line and has lower skidpad numbers. The Mustang GT/PP is just behind an M4 on Streets of Willow. Are you seriously going to tell me that an STI would "mop the floor" with an M4?

I'm far from a fanboy and the STI is an incredible car, but come on...

I think its not a bad choice. Personally the 2015 STI is a joke, it should have got the far more capable new 2.0 motor that's in the WRX.

The 2015 STI is not available in a hatchback tho. Still it's got 4 doors.
