I went from an STI to an M3 because my ringland on #4 cracked. It's significantly different, I'm speaking of AWD to RWD. While I don't have a Mustang the weight of my convertible and power is similar to a 2015 GT.

I had a pro-tune stage 2 and you could just mash the pedal even in the wet and it would hook up, it would push more in turns but you could put the power down much easier. Also there is about a 400+ pound difference which you will feel in any turn.

You just have to be more selective in applying power, even with snow tires on on cold dry pavement I'm triggering traction control at anything past half throttle in 1st gear.

Money-wise you are going to get murdered. Personally I'd wait until late spring unless you are in the deep south.

One note on performance of the STI to the Mustang, stock to stock the GT will put a hurting on an STI at a track. Here's the thing where you may see a GT with and exhaust switch and a tune the average buyer of a GT will probably keep the car stock. Almost no one will keep an STI stock so expect every STI you see to be making 20%-30% more power and Torque than stock numbers and be 400lbs lighter while on traction limited public roads.

I never understood the STI logic
GT almost = M4
M4>STI
STI>GT

somehow it just doesn't add up?
I agree with this. No offense to the WRX/STI but like I said previously, I was seriously considering an STI until I saw the new Mustang, and it just offers SO MUCH MORE for the money - not just in terms of performance, but standard equipment, materials, LOOKS, everything. No AWD but I'm not nearly as terrified of that in the snow as I apparently should be based on everyone's panic about it. I figure winter tires and I'm good.

Anyway the STI is a great tuner car, but I think the EcoBoost Mustang is easily on pace to be an even better tuner car, and the GT beats it out of the box, period, and both are substantially cheaper for similar options. No brainer in my book unless you absolutely have to have 4 doors.

The only reason I would never buy an STI is I couldn't stand having a car that sounds like it's constantly shitting its pants.

Doesn't seem like a bad choice to me.

I wonder how you come to these conclusions.

Come on. Sure there are better cars out there. However, performance wise, the STI is not one of them. Every test I've seen shows the mustang gt is the faster car.

Please explain how/when the 2015 STI will wipe the floor with a 2015 GT - outside of wet/snowy conditions.
ok, maybe not mop the floor, and I was wrong to go along with that expression. But what I was getting at is from what I have seen people on here think their mustang is the best car produced. I remember when I posted my initial thoughts after I got my mustang and how it compared to my lightly mazdaspeed 3 and people jumped on me about it.

That's because for the most part it is the best overall car in it's price range when you consider performance, quality, and aesthetics. From what I've seen on here, people are pretty open when it can be proven that cars are better or faster, it's when people say things that are completely untrue, such as the STI mopping the floor with the GT, that people get upset. I've never driven a mazdaspeed 3, so I can't comment on that comparison, but the GT was certainly ten times better than the STI I test drove.

Also, I dont mean that as a knock on the STI because the STI is a GREAT car. It just goes to show how truly great the mustang is.

I don't necessarily agree nor disagree with that assessment. Depends on the individual.

However, in my experience this is not a unique condition that only infects mustang enthusiasts.

At varying points over the past number of years I have actively followed STI, Evo X, MS3, 135i/335i, LX (300c/charger) and mustang forums. They all have their fanboys who believe their cars can do no wrong.

Ford sells a lot of Mustangs, a lot, and while many do a number of mods you are not going to see a large portion with heavy performance mods. I see many mustangs on a daily basis and I'd say maybe 20% are obviously modified (exhaust and visual mods).

Let me put it this way, the ratio of significant performance modification will have a much greater average to overall STI production than to overall Mustang production.

Ford probably sells more mustangs in a year than Subaru sells cars.
All of those mustang owners are not going to be gear heads on a forum whereas I'd say most STI owners are. I mean who else would buy a tarted up economy car? The headliner on my STI had more in common with rat fur than cloth.

Probably. Though I'd suspect in a more apples to apples comparison the ratio would be closer. i.e. gt to sti vs. all mustangs to sti.

Or include the base impreza in your subaru numbers and then see where the ratio nets out.

Not from a financial stand point, or anything else of that matter, but just in genereal I want to know if you guys think I made a good or bad decision? I know you all have mustangs so I want to see if any of you think I should've stuck with the STI over the 5.0? For me personally, I wanted the V8 crackle, instant torque, incredible interior, and basically bulletproof engine (compared to the EJ25) to mod and make big power. I'm scared i'll blow something in the subie.

Thanks!
Ha. Financially, horrible. You took the largest percentage of the depreciation hit possible in what may be the smallest amount of time possible. That lost coin is a lot of modification, and impulsive decisions sure aren't cheap. Car-wise, pretty decent. The STI has 'instant torque' by all accounts, and the EJ25's problems are well-documented at least. No question the 5.0 will be more trouble-free, just watch that number 8 cylinder on your tunes (flamesuit on) :headbonk:.

I like you, OP. You went from awesome to awesome. I salute your fine taste in automotive transportation. I think you've done very well - owning a delicious sounding V8 is an American tradition not many enjoy these days. Be one of the few, the proud, the VIPS at the gas station. I'll be right there with ya.

I'm keeping my GTI for snow and wet days but I'm loving my Mustang.
