It was on a different car but the Engineering Explained guy did some dyno testing between clean/dirty filters, he also removed the hydrocarbon trap which seemed to make the biggest difference (to his surprise).
It may have flowed a small amount better, but the idle and stalling issues did not make it worth it. They need to rethink their lip around the airbox seal.

The comments about oiled filters NOT effectively capturing fine dust are exactly opposite of what I've thought all along. My thinking was that the oil is in fact what catches the dust.

The non-oiled filters, I'd have thought, would be the ones to allow the fine dust to more easily pass through.

Are we sure on this as it makes no sense to me?
Oiled filters will be fine for the amount of dust we see on the roads that we drive but don't be fooled into thinking that they catch the ultra fine micro particles. As I stated I've seen it every time with MX and Enduro racing in dusty conditions where it does get past the filter.

The other thing about filters as mentioned above is surface area, grab a genuine Ford paper filter and count the number of pleats and compare that to the number of pleats on any brand of oiled filter and the Ford paper one has more than double the pleats.

I did notice that. More pleats and longer pleats. I did the K&N drop in this weekend but I may go back to OEM if the AEM was having stalling issues. I live off a small dirt road so this thread is making me nervous.

It seems like the hydrocarbon trap is the biggest bang for the buck as it costs nothing and shows measurable results. Small but measurable.

Nothing like actual experience! Thanks.

I will say that I currently run an AEM dry panel filter and whenever I've gone back to the stock paper filter, there's a bit of a hesitance with in the ability of the car to get moving. It's as if it's being choked a bit initially before the full air flow makes it past the filter … may swap back to OEM to see if it happens again.

I have run the K & N since I got the car almost a year ago. It fits in the stock airbox with an EXTREMELY tight seal....seems tighter than the stock filter. Apparently, the AEM filter doesn't seal well based on zinc's experience. I don't drive on gravel roads or around much dust so I am not worried about the n'th degree of filtration. I just knock the bugs out of it once in a while.

I put my stock filter back in because I had an excessive amount of dust/dirt in my intake tubing and intake manifold after running a Green filter. Avoid them.

If it locks down on 15-17 great. Did not on mine? $35 shipped you could be another tester. :).
I have a 17 and the AEM filter fits tighter against the lid than my K&N does, stock paper filter fits about the same as the AEM on my car.

I just want to know what the actual micron filtration rating is for the AEM. And how it compares to the OEM paper filter.

Does anyone know?

Not sure if this answers your questions - the AEM seemed to fare pretty well http://autohifidiszkont.hu/bmw-tuning.hu/aemszuroteszt.pdf
The fact that a dry air filter did better than the K&N is not surprising. Also, the change in efficiency after repeated washing was also quite good.

But still, how does it fair against and OEM paper filter?

I have yet to see real testing results from any brand of washable filter comparing them to dust collection and efficiency of a single use paper filter.

I'm concerned about that as well.

Interesting going over the test results. However, does it say anything about how much dust gets through the filters? And how do these test results translate to real world?
