Find a car nearby with 3.73 gears and go for a test drive to see how you like them. For drag racing and rowing the gears on the street 3.73 gears are awesome. For lots of highway use I would opt for 3.31 gears.

Had the following
3.73 in the 95 Cobra was perfect
3.55 in my 04 GT was alright definately more steetable than the previous car
4.10 in my 97 Cobra was great for romping but freeway and mileage not so much.
3.73 in the current stang, to me is perfect but this has more HP/TQ and an extra gear compared to my previous ones.

I drove the 3.31 didn't like it, i would have went 3.73 if i didn't opt for the PP

Your earlier cars have different transmission ratios so they are irrelevant. Rear gears mean nothing on their own.

Guys who 1/4 mile drag race like the 3.31 gears because they can cross the finish line in 4th gear, whereas with the 3.73 gears they hit rev-limiter before the 1/4 mile and need to shift to 5th causing a poorer 1/4 mile time.

If I had a shop switch my 3.31 to 3.73 what would I need to buy? Just ring and pinion set or rind and pinion with install kit?

I'd swap someone my 373's for 331's if it weren't for the cost of labor being crazy.

I like the 3.73 overall. 3rd is a hoot on back road sweepers - seems to hit the sweet spot between fun and stupid (60mph with a lot of steam left). Fits my style of driving pretty well. 2nd usually elicits emotional outbursts from the passenger seat. 1st, for whatever reason feels a tad too low/wheel-spinny unless my tires are really warmed up. I'm almost afraid to use it all. You can always short shift 2-4 if you get lazy.

Daily driver with a 10-15 min communte predominantly freeway. I find 6th fairly tall and lopey (this engine doesn't make LS torque down low). Seems to be a good balance. I'd like to try a 3.55 other things being equal to compare.

Like the 3.73's overall. Don't like the stump puller 1st gear in the tranny. The 3.66 first gear is too steep for a 3.73 or 4.10 rear. A 2.95 or 2.66 1st gear sure would be nice. 2nd gear... like MtnBiker said. 3rd, 4th, and 5th are sweet... wind up fast. Cruising on the freeway in 6th at 80 mph ~2400 RPM. Surprised I'm getting 18.5 mpg mixed freeway, rolling parking lot ride home and plenty of stop 'n' go traffic.

AND... as an added bonus if you order now: You can still row through 4 gears while stuck behind a soccer mom in an SUV talking on her cell phone! ;)

That is all...

For me the 3.73 gears are a lot of fun. However, I daily my car and my commute is nothing but traffic. I always skip 2nd and 4th unless I'm messing around having fun. There's times where I wish I chose a different gear set but I wouldn't trade my car for anything. I can't stop driving it!!!

I figured that was a given, was just giving a general experience over the stock setups. While maybe "irrelevant" to the s550 in direct comparison the experience is roughly the same. Next time ill provide more relevant info. ;)

I have 3.55's and I couldn't imagine this car with something higher (numerically)... First gear is already stupid short, most of the time I just start in 2nd and if I am in traffic I leave it in 3rd... I wouldn't put it past this car to be able to start in 4th or 5th its retarded... If the shifts were any shorter I don't think it would be enjoyable, hell I could even go with a taller gear and be happy.

I really enjoy my 3.31's and I can't imagine switching to a 3.73 even without having a major power adder. I might be okay with 3.55's though.

There is not a 4-5 shift required in the 1/4 mile with the 3.73 gears. I have run mine at the track a few times. Crosses the finish perfectly.

If you're running stock rear tires then you must be crossing right at 7000 RPM in 4th gear, because that would be around 113~115 MPH.

When guys start adding HP, and are capable of going faster than 115 MPH in the 1/4 mile, then they will definitely need 5th gear with 3.71 rear end gears.

Figure this is a good thread for it but if anyone wants to swap my 3.73's for their 3.55's I'm more than happy to do that for free in northern california.
