I'm coming up on needing to do my first oil change on my 22 gt (first by me, not the cars first) and I'm nervous. Never touched such a new vehicle

Do you really have to replace the oem plug every change or can you get away with reusing?

Well it appears we've all been surprised by that short filter.........the FL-500S is much easier to grip with my filter wrench so nothing to worry about next time!!

I had to raise my 3 gallon catch pan on a plastic bucket to make sure I didn't make the same mistake I did on my 2019 car.......oil flew out of the gaping drain hole and about 3 quarts completely missed the catch pan as I frantically moved it back trying to catch the gusher.....NO BUENO!! By having it about 3" below the drain I was able to catch every drop........I kinda felt good about something for a pleasant change!!

Just use a long sheet of aluminum foil. You can form it into a ramp and stuff it up around the cooler and it will stay in place.

I reused mine, but I also bought a spare plug from rockauto that came with an extra gasket. For my next oil change I'll reuse it but change the gasket

Same! My catch pan couldn’t keep up with the flow. Fortunately, I had placed a large flat catch pan under my large plastic oil pan. It caught the overflow.

Cool! That's what I referring to. Everyone has a process that works for them.

1) IIRC, Ford Service says to change it after every oil change. But don't take that as gospel.

2) Good for you doing it yourself. Don't be nervous. Just be prepared.

- Low profile jack is best.

- ALWAYS make sure the o-ring from the used filter your removing came off the block, and didn't get stuck on ther like he shows in the video.

- Most important, write down notes before you start. Add/subtract to it as you go along. Make it a robust process.
- Keep a detailed log book of your Mustang maintenance.

Only thing I will add is the filter wrench I use from Harley Davidson works great on the Mustang. A 3/8" ratchet extension fits into the square hole and you can set it so the extension comes in over the cross member and doesn't interfere with anything you're using as a funnel to direct the oil into a pan.

I have used the same plug 5 times, the o-ring still looks good.

I think what was happening was people were breaking off the "locking tabs" and the OEM plugs might actually EXIT while driving??

I think this is the first post with the title "first oil change" and didn't mention anything about a tick or what is this noise that appeared.....

Mine is ticking BEFORE my first oil change...I'm at 1500 miles. But, I do plan to do my own oil as well, and this thread is great for pointers. The cardboard on the backside of the drain pan is my go-to idea since it worked on other cars in the past.

For what it's worth, I've used this on other vehicles with success as well, especially my Hemi Ram. Oil filter removal process on that truck without something like this results in the steering rack being covered in old oil.

This is the oil pan I've used for years...
It's only 7 quarts, but with the Ronin plug, I can drop 5 out, dump, then drop final 5. Great price and Made In USA.

I just buy a box 100 latex gloves too. I prefer those, because they grip so well.

Oh, I haven't used a trouble light for years since I started using a headlamp. It's one of the best tools I have. I use it ALL the time.

Any brand will do. I've bought a few Gearlights. Good price and I got a few extra for the grandkids to screw around with - lol.

Here's a link to the Ronin plug. I know some guys don't like them. So far, I haven't had any issues.
I keep the adapter in its original container in the trunk of my Mustang just in case.

The factory Ford plug is a pretty stout piece of plastic. Other vendors have a like mindset with their oil drain plug (metal plug) gaskets: replace at every oil change. But almost everyone does not, or flips the gasket, re-using multiple times.

I can't speak to re-using the factory plug. I replaced mine with an aftermarket unit. But I did save my old one. Seems like a good practice to buy a spare factory unit and set aside.

Regarding the factory plug, I believe one reason Ford recommends replacing is how people handle it.

The factory plug doesn't unscrew like a traditional plug, but releases with one quarter turn. I believe most people instinctively have a pair of pliers and grab ahold of it, which is OK, but then apply force as to unscrew instead of simply turn a bit and release. Same with tightening. The factory plug has stops or "ears". For those that don't notice when tightening, or that tighten too much, they apply too much and unnecessary force on those stops and break them off or crack them in the process.

You can reuse it. I actually reused mine at least ten times before I ever heard of any recommendations to replace the factory drain plug every other time. I finally replaced it with a Ronin drain plug though. Still have the original drain plug as a back up...

Good job changing your own oil. I'd recommend a magnetic drain plug and inspect your used oil. I have found crank sprocket teeth on 2 separate engines! 100% stock car, never hit the limiter.
