I lifted the car on my QuickJacks and dropped what seemed like 50 gallons of relatively clean oil then tried to remove the factory filter........WTF:devil:......it's a LOT shorter than the replacement FL-500S but I finally got it off and all is well!!:like::like:

Why's the factory filter so small??

I think this is the first post with the title "first oil change" and didn't mention anything about a tick or what is this noise that appeared.....

Good job fine sir!!!!

As for the filter, yeah it is dinky compared to FL-500s. Glad you muscled it off.

Thats weird. The longer filter wont interfere with LT headers right? I havent done my first yet, but I have headers now and I didnt install them, shop did. So I havent really seen under there where the filter is located and how close to the LTs.

Glad to hear things worked out.

Not a lot of clearance to grip the filter, yes.

I've bought and now used each of these with success:

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/lil-57020

I wasn't sure what to expect. Prepping for the first oil change, I bought both.

I used the three-finger unit and it worked great. The other, I've used on my truck.
That 3 leg wrench is pretty cool looking. When I changed my own oil, I always used the ā€œstandardā€ filter wrench when i couldn’t get it using my hands. Now I just pay my Ford dealer to do it 😁

The first oil change was a shit show for me and the issues were all about getting the factory oil filter off. I built a funnel out of a half gallon milk container by cutting out the bottom and two of the four side. Worthless. Trying to get the oil filter cranked off took a set of very large channel locks. Once I did the oil spilled everywhere. Next time I'll use aluminum foil to cover up the wiring and connectors and just let it flow. Plus I went with a K&N oil filter and will use the nut on top to remove the oil filter the next time.

Well it appears we've all been surprised by that short filter.........the FL-500S is much easier to grip with my filter wrench so nothing to worry about next time!!:)

I had to raise my 3 gallon catch pan on a plastic bucket to make sure I didn't make the same mistake I did on my 2019 car.......oil flew out of the gaping drain hole and about 3 quarts completely missed the catch pan as I frantically moved it back trying to catch the gusher.....NO BUENO!! By having it about 3" below the drain I was able to catch every drop........I kinda felt good about something for a pleasant change!!:like::handsinair:

Straight out the back, like a fire hose. A tarp and old t-shirts helped. Should have considered a deflector shield to get it into the pan. UPR drain plug installed now. Future oil changes should be easier. :please:

For the filter, I first used a "V"-shaped cardboard form, for shape, laid with tinfoil. To protect the wiring bundle in the immediate vicinity, I put t-shirts there.

**EDIT for my post below:
- Some say do the filter first, then the oil pan.
- Some prefer UPR drain plugs over Ronin.
- Some do not prime the filter.
- Some do not lube the oil filter o-ring.
- ^To this I say, be informed, and do what works best for you.**

The first oil change is a pita. I've read where you can just loosen the yellow plug, and let 5 quarts out a time. But I did all 10 with a little mess.

On my '20:

- Remove the 7mm fastener on the plastic pan door to access the filter.

- Wipe off the pan/door, and use duct tape to hold it open.

- Loosen the filter, then place a one-time-use , open sided aluminum foil funnel under the to oil filter to channel the oil.

- Prime and lube the o-ring on the new filter, then screw it on snug.

- I have the Ronin Drain Plug. Just remove the cap, and thread the adapter in. My pans only 5 quarts, so I just close it up after 5 quarts is out, dump that, then come back for final 5.

I love K and N oil filters, have used them for 20+ years, that nut is the best thing since sliced bread, IMO. Don't know why other filter makers haven't caught onto that.

I duct tape a piece of cardboard as a backsplash on my drain pan, sure was glad I did! ;)

When I did my first oil change I used a 16 qt tub like this

and the oil was coming out so fast I thought it'd go over the top the whole time lol

Same! My catch pan couldn’t keep up with the flow. Fortunately, I had placed a large flat catch pan under my large plastic oil pan. It caught the overflow.
