I did the swap from the stock restricted 2022 air lid to a used 2020 lid. I measured the ID of both with micrometers in the MAF cross section of the lids. FYI, the 2020 is exactly 3mm larger than the 2022. My drivability and mpg are unaffected by the swap. I guess 3mm overall is within the acceptable margin of error for the MAF?

You should be fine. That isn't a significant enough of a change that would require a tune. If you have an rough idling, it should clear on its own. You can also disconnect the battery and then idle for a few mins, but probably not necessary.

All around the several inches of area with the MAF slot. Once past that, going toward the filter area it would start to taper down smaller. 2022= 2.900 around and 2020 with sleeve in= 2.750. A .150 or 3.8mm difference overall diameter.

I wonder if the laminar MAF housing grid actually increased airflow vs prior non-laminar grid MAF housing.

The extra filter and the frame holding it, while right against the actual air filter could cause some real turbulence. I have convinced myself that this turbulence is why the grid is needed. IDK for sure.

I’m guessing Ford has cleaned up the low speed airflow MAF signal in the name of cleaner tailpipe emissions. Plus I bet with Fords development team measures a low speed power improvement with the laminar flow grid.
Just guessing.

Did you take out the inner tube insert (from the MAF cross section) from the 22 and put it in the 2020 lid? I would think that would make the inner diameter the same (that is what I did).

I did not use the insert. (I didn't even realize that it would fit in the older lid) Just swapped lids and added a drop in filter.

So your saying the 2020 lid tapers down from the MAF to the lid ? i have a 2020 lid on my '17 and didn't notice a taper.

When was this change made to the lid? after 2021 into 2022?

See the below pic, that lip that the arrow is pointing at is the lip of the inner insert tube. You can wedge a flat head in that crack and work around the tube to pop out the insert.

NOTE: The pic is not from a 22 lid but I am just using it to show where the insert is on the 22 lid.

There was a slight tapper where the tube meets the open box section. My gamble on just swapping the lid with no changes was to see if the car still ran perfectly with the old lid. It has so far. started up with no idle changes. Afr and mpg unchanged. My only question in this, is if the PCM calibration for the MAF is the same as previous years, or if the few MM difference is just within the margin of error for the PCM to have no issue. Like, if I got a custom tune would I need to tell the tuner that I had an older air lid so they could adjust for the MAF size.

I have only seen one person that had actually done any testing after removing the carbon filter and also with/without the inner tube (see below link) and that was with a Mach 1 but I think the same principles probably apply to the GT.

In a nutshell, it seems that with removing the carbon filter and even without the insert that it was still "within" specs but too close to being out of specs for his comfort, so he used the inner tube.
