I was informed by my dealer that my Modem is not communicating and needs to be replaced. Any suggestions. Is this something I can buy and install myself?

You probably can, but it's my understanding the TCU is VIN-specific; it would have to be programmed by the dealer or provider first, like a key.

I'm going to point to some references which could help with the swap.

Edit,

I'm doing some deep dives on this now.

The physical swap is easy.

The logical programming is somewhat involved. The installer needs to program the TCU to match the as-built data of the car, then associate that TCU with the car and Ford. For those who use FORScan, FDRS and other products, it can be done.

Modem is easy to swap (in the trunk behind a panel), but you have to confirm if it needs to be programmed for your car or if it's plug-and-play.

I'm a bit confused. The TCU is the Transmission Control Unit, correct?
The Modem connects the car to the internet, correct?
What "needs" replaced and why? Or what do I have wrong?

Thanks. Don't people deliberately disable that so Ford spy on you?
Easier to just unplug the modem, I think. The TCU in my 2020 Escape seems to have disabled itself though. Lost connection to Ford Pass, can’t reconnect. Modem will talk to a wifi network, so it’s not the culprit.

Yep. So did the OP buy the car new or used? If used, it’s possible a prior Tinfoiler disabled it…

Although... if you don't want Ford to collect information about you then I wouldn't do a thing...

In the trunk, left hand side, behind the trim.
See the attached document.
Thanks so much. So it looks like I have to bring it back to the dealer to program the new TCU

A good mechanic will/should have the ability to program modules. Or you could with the right scan tool. Unfortunately those are $4k and upwards with a hefty annual fee so most DIY guys won't have one.
