Hello all - I have a 2016 GT with Perf Pack and I love driving the car but if there was one complaint, it's that the exhaust is a smidge quiet. Although, I do love that there's almost zero engine drone while cruising. I have a family of four and we spend a decent amount of time in the car.

I wouldn't mind livening the exhaust a bit, without compromising engine drone. I don't need this thing to sound obnoxious.. in fact, my wife would not be happy if that were the case. Ha!

Any suggestions for an improvement of deep exhaust sound without compromising exhaust drone at cruising speeds?

Side note: The 2018-2023 exhaust modes would be PERFECT in this scenario. Thanks in advance.

What’s your budget ?
Drone is controlled at the mufflers.
The 2015-17 OEM mufflers get a bit tinny sounding with a resonator delete.

Yes, I definitely want to avoid a "tinny" sound. That's good awareness.

I'm somewhat flexible on budget.

Is that year compatible with the active exhaust retrofit? That’s the best solution imo because you’re in full control of the sound

yes possibly
AWE
CORSA
Those two systems are absolutely drone free and mufflers do not have any fiber packing material.
There's a few good fiber packed drone free options but I’m not personally a fan of the sound of those systems. To old school for me, I like high pitched exotic.

I enjoy my Borla S Type. Tame when driving easy and aggressive when you punch it. No drone at all.

OP, I think you'll need to quantify what volume threshold you are willing to signup for before proceeding with exhaust mods. I watched a ton of Youtube videos before pulling the trigger on a Borla S-Type. Especially with cat-backs, they are all a lot louder than you would think. Drone can be avoided by design, but more volume is a side effect of less restriction.

On my car (a 2015), I converted to the 2018+ rear bumper with quad tip exhaust because the Borla tone and the quad look were what I wanted. While it does not drone at all in any gear and situation (even lugging it in 6th gear), this thing is LOUD when you get on it. Apparently, the 2015-2017 version with twin tips is supposed to be lower in overall volume vs the quad version. I've gotten used to the volume under load and still love the tone, but my wife can only tolerate it when cruising at a constant ~2k rpm (where it is the quietest and invisible). She hates it at pretty much any other driving situation because of the volume.

This is a long way of saying that if you want to stay on the quieter side, the Ford Performance (edit: FP Touring) exhausts came in a close second when I was looking, so that would be my recommendation if you are willing/able to spend the coin. Or go with an axle-back and keep the big suitcase resonator.

Wait, you can fit 4 people in your car? I have a 2016 convertible, and the back seats are a total joke. Do the non convertibles have a little more room?

Given that you had active exhaust on your 2019.. what made you want Borla instead of the factory active exhaust? Just curious on the differences.

Borla type s and if you need it a little quieter than that get the borla resonator with it. Gives a nice deep tone that's very easy to drive around with the family in the car.

No, my car didn’t have active exhaust. I bought it used and the previous owner had put a Horrible droning Thrush muffler system on it. The Borla was a fantastic upgrade. I had Borla exhausts on other cars and was familiar with their quality.
