EPA tests aren't bullet proof Chef. Ford has to follow the same guidelines as every other manufacturer when submitting a test vehicle. Same goes for actual testing of the vehicle. If they got better numbers initially during EPA testing that weren't realistic then they have the option to lower them, themselves. Maybe Ford knew the testing results were inflated, maybe they didn't. However it doesn't mean they forged the test results. Just sayin.
Exactly and in the article I linked Ford admitted to making a mistake the way they tested in house and once they got on the same page with the EPA they corrected what they did wrong.

Sorry, I don't trust something a manufacturer says in these cases . I find it hard to believe that a company of this magnitude couldn't follow EPA guidelines correctly. They're in the same boat as Hyundai to me when it comes to EPA. I don't think either one was a simple mistake of not doing the EPA test correctly.

Ford was going to get busted one way or another, people were complaining about CMAX and Fusion MPG.

Just to put this out there, I'm pretty sure Ford wants to actually beat the competition when it comes to their most efficient lines. Not just say they beat them, because as you said the truth will out one way or another. Ford has no reason to be this dishonest, as they know they'd be caught if they thought the vehicles weren't going to get the claimed mpg's

What's common sense? They were hit hard because they were LYING. Just like Hyundai. I bet they're not doing anything more strict than EPA standards, it really wouldn't make any sense. You follow set standards/guidelines so you can compete with other manufacturers, unless you lie so people think the CMAX, Fusion, or whatever else gets better MPG than Prius or Accord hybrid.
That's a bit of a black and white opinion....... It's much more grey area than that. Ford put their vehicles through the test as the EPA guidelines require but likely made small tweaks to the engine management system to improve performance in the areas the test values most. Which is supposed to represent what drivers do most. However they discovered the EPA real world and ford real world were not in alignment so they changed their internal parameters to better reflect what is a real world driving scenario.

Side note I always laugh when I see a Prius going 85 down the highway. That speed with that weak engine prolly destroys their mpg. Top gear did a great segment going around tier track with an m3 and Prius. Idea was the Prius would go 10/10ths and the m3 would just stay on its bumper and the m3 got better mileage....

Decent or not, they are not an improvement. And now Chevy is that much closer to being comparable. Granted I'll say something optimistic here in that maybe this is a ruse to throw them off their game and are intentionally saying it gets less. But I doubt it as the backlash in marketing would hurt them far more than chevy one upping them later.

We all know most would be singing a different tune if we were talking about GM or Honda here.

Prius and M3..The only thing it proves is that all cars will waste gas while being dogged. Obviously performance of drastically different cars will be different. What would be the difference in gas mileage between the two if both were pushed to their own limits? 85 in any car will probably destroy mileage. My underpowered Subaru has gotten 35 mpg on multiple freeway trips while exceeding speed limit by a few. Sonata turbo for example which is rated higher than my car across the board can't exceed my Subaru's mpg.

What some people don't get is that the highway rating has nothing to do with the 70mph freeway speed and will bash manufacturers when they don't achieve it.

Chevy will have no problem at the very least matching that Highway mpg.. They already do with the auto.

Yea, I'm not comparing this to any other car besides it's previous generation. I could honestly care less as long as Ford is progressing in a positive manner. At least in regards to BMW, too costly for me.

You can't say that any particular car "at the very least matches" the EPA MPG estimates. It all depends on driving style and conditions. I've gotten up to 35 mpg in my V6 Mustang driving straight and controlled on the highway; I've gotten as low as 14 when I'm brake-torquing out of every red light and power sliding donuts around parking lots. I've gotten as low as 20 mpg on straight highway runs when I alternate between spooling it up to 6500 RPM and dropping it back down to idle so I can experience a couple of seconds of rushing acceleration every minute or so on the highway. It all depends.

We're talking about EPA ratings. Nothing to do with your real world experience of taking it easy or beating on the car. Camaro will at the very least match 25.
