OK as I was looking at the C&D review of the Mustang I saw this on their site.

http://blog.caranddriver.com/2015-d...sed-report-says-chrysler-dynod-car-at-825-hp/

A 4488 curb weight Challenger gets 22 MPG combined and yet our GT Mustangs can't get better then 21 combined? This car weighs more then 730+ lbs heavier and it's getting better combined MPG!?!

What gives here that I'm missing?
It doesn't get 22 combined. The Hellcat gets 22 on the highway rating with the auto.

Maybe re-read it? :)

It says 22 MPG HIGHWAY (8 speed auto) not combined. Manual is 21 MPG highway.

EDIT: Youngmustang beat me to it ;)

Hehe, sorry. I don't really know what the answer would be to it. My current has the 3.15's in it and I get ~300 miles per tank depending on how I drive. I've managed to get over 320 a couple of times on longer, mostly highway trips.
If you are crossing along on the highway or higher speeds will you see the benefit of the lower gear ratio, stop and go traffic can actually screw up your mpg all depending on your drive style... if you drive like a granny, you won't see that much a difference though spirited driving, you will definitely see it. On a 3.73 you will see better acceleration which also there is less effort to the engine on stop and go as well as it being easier to spin up those tires... gotta love them burnouts... on the highway though might go opposite... a loss in mpg at the highway speeds can also depends on your drive style. My truck has 3.73 with a 26 gallon tank I average mostly 15 or so mpg mixed spirited driving though on highway, I have not had a constant highway rating on my truck... going 70ish mph on a trip for a drill weekend. 200 mile round trip, filling up anywhere from 18 to 20 gallons I saw mileages at or about 350 at best.... on a normal mixed week I can get anywhere from 260 to 310 miles a week driving like a bastard.. your tires are a factor, alignment, temps, weather conditions are all factors too that you can't omit from your mpg

They say you can improve both performance and fuel economy by using (pure) Gasoline that has no Ethanol. I have found a few isolated Gas Stations that have 90 Octane Pure Gas (without) the 10% Ethanol added. Its (only) 90 cents more per gallon then Regular 87 octane gas with the 10% added Ethanol. Think paying almost a buck a gallon extra is worth it? NOT!

have that here, 90 oct sunoco without ethanol. on my 12 gti i got ~1 mpg more with it over the 87 i normally run.. but it is only 20 cent more per gal. but still it is lost money. gained 15 miles more per tank for 3 bucks..

going to try it again when the weather cools.

beers

I was curious so I went to the EPA site and found out what control models were used for their testing:

V6 Manual - 3.15 axle
V6 Auto - Two vehicles, one 3.15, one 3.55
EB Manual - 3.31
EB Auto - 3.15
GT Manual - 3.31 axle
GT Auto - Two vehicles, one with 3.15, one with 3.55, test results look weighted to 3.15 slightly

Looks like none of the vehicles had performance packs based on that. Link to EPA list data:

The EB Auto is 3.15. They have wrong information posted. Only the EBPP auto is 3.55

Good catch, you can't get the EB non-PP Auto with 3.31.

Interesting, and probably explains the drop in the GT AT highway mileage this year. My 3.15 AT is already capable of 28-30 at 60-65 mph on a level freeway, at 500 miles. Somehow 25 sounds a bit low.

FWIW Dabko (sp?) here has an auto with 3.55's and has shown shots of HWY MPG right about 26..so it would seem the majority of the testing with the auto was done with 3.55's
