Hey guys,
I've seen a ton of comparison posts but nothing with its arch nemesis the 1LE. It's a pretty devastating track monster with great reviews - all the Camaro issues remain including massive size and weight, poor visibility, terrible interior etc, but no doubt it's a performance monster.

C&D has the 1LE high on it's lightning lap list etc (it puts down incredible time for it's power to wt ratio as well as its price, the former meaning the chassis is great) - there is no doubt GM has managed to make this fat lady dance - I would argue its the most balanced all rounder Camaro out there (the Z28 which I have not driven is a monster but very specialized). Do we think the S550 can beat it?

The new Mustang will be an incredibly fun road car - no doubt and not for a moment did I consider the 1LE as I want a slinky package and a superb motor - with the S550 the interior, exterior and engine have sold me. But will it be faster when turns are involved? Let the speculation begin!!!

Most of the 'complaints' both drivers had about the Mustang are being addressed in a big way by the redesign. Brake dive? Fixed. Body roll? Fixed. Torque band? By all indications, significantly improved at the very least. Unsettled ride? Fixed by the IRS and change to the front suspension. Grip? Hopefully improved by the larger rear tires and suspension changes.

We also know the brakes themselves are better. Weight distribution is most likely improved. Hopefully the damping is better this time around too.

Now, certainly I have to throw out the disclaimer that all of the above assumptions are based on what we know today about the changes and the promises that have been made by Ford. Obviously we won't know the reality of how all of the changes/improvements add up for a couple more months. But suffice it to say, by all indications the new GT+PP will do a WAY better job of competing with the 1LE in the twisties than the outgoing model did...

^^^^ what Scott said.

And not to forget the power is increasing, along with what appears to be a fatter power curve. This engine will be more Road Runner than Coyote.

Plus you have to believe that, despite Ford's lip service about raising their aspirations beyond the Camaro, the 1LE was one of the cars right in the middle of their cross hairs when engineering this new GT. How could it not be? Hard to ignore the elephant in the room...

I know you touched on it right at the beginning, but I couldn't get past the camaro interior long enough to make a comparison. I test drove a 1SS today and as soon as I sat down I didn't want to drive it the interior was so bad. I didn't understand the screen or the gauge placement it was just terrible...driving didn't make it better either. Granted the 1LE is different, but nothing could get me past that atrocious interior!

For sure. If Ford delivers well on all the promised technical enhancements (another one is wider track, lower CG, the list is endless...) what you said def should hold.

Agreed. I also notice you drive a VW. Dunno about your experience but having owned German cars the Camaro interior is just too much of a step back. From what I've seen of the Stang I dont feel I've given up on anything in interior snazz (infact, compared to the M235i I feel it's significantly better)

I like the quality feel of my VW, the wife and I have both drive one, but besides buying it two years ago, I don't have any other experience with them. We test drove some Audis recently and again, amazing interiors.

I don't know about others on this thread, but the first time I drove a modern mustang was the 2010 new body style and although it still had the 4.6, I was impressed ford paid attention to the interior, exterior AND power. To me it was and still is a great full package where a lot of the other cars just put all their engineering time into one point. Sure you can have a great car around the track, but would you ever want to drive it on the street a few times a week or even DD? Not with the camaro, I could see myself DD even the BOSS, it's stripped down but still has enough goodies and a decent looking interior I don't see it compromising anything. The S550 looks to be even better. I haven't always been a ford guy, but the mustang has impressed me and caught my eye since that 2010 test drive and now with the new one I'm even more of a fan. Throw in the fact Chevy bombed the interior and i couldn't see myself paying 40k for any Chrysler product let alone a fat pig straight line car...mustang is a win all over. IRS, modern styling, upgraded everything...did the LE even stand a chance?

Randy Probst was in love with the Boss...until he drove the 1LE. When I was deciding we messaged back in forth on FB and he was 1LE all the way. I talked to him at a race right after I ordered my '15 GT/PP and he was very excited to thrash the '15. His biggest complaint with the outgoing GT/Boss was braking confidence (cured) and control over unsettled pavement (solved with IRS) So I look forward to him getting to do another comparison for Motor Trend once they release the magazine test mules. I never understood the visibility issue with the Camaro, I thought the '14 Mustang was worse than the '14 1LE I test drove. The 1LE would be a welcome addition to my stable because it is that good and I am a Ford Blue Blood. The problem is the Camaro is $3-4K more when you opt for 1LE/Recaro's. If the '15 GT/PP is half of what they say it is the Camaro will loose big to the people who actually take their cars to the track. Don't get me wrong, I still want a 1LE, it is a special car, but the Mustang is coming first.

I respect your opinions, but I've also driven both and just don't agree at all about the visibility issue between the two. You practically have to be a car length behind the spot you'd normally be in at a stoplight to even see it in a 1LE. To me, the Mustang is much easier to see out of. It does look, however, that the S550 may be a bit narrower from the belt line to the top of the glass so visibility may be getting a bit worse for the Mustang faithful.

I'd rather have the Camaro purely based on the engine, both cars are great looking and perform well but the Camaro's engine would be something lovely to have in my life.

Camaros are dangerous to see out of, period!
