Its a tire on a mustang, worse case scenario, he ends up with another flat. I agree with repairing it and go with it. That is way to much tire to just toss without at least trying. I am surprised the sensor is still working after having the goo through it though.

Nope

Worst case scenario is the tire blowing in a right handed corner and him dying, or killing someone, or both.

You guys never wonder what causes the blown tires you see on the side or the road?

Usually over or under inflation, running a tire well beyond it's intended wear limits, etc. I had a sidewall on a brand new Michelin tire blow out doing 50mph..manufacturer defect. Things can happen regardless of the precautions taken, and I personally wouldn't have a problem with running on a repaired tire. Unless of course it was as previously stated (close or in the sidewall or motorcycle)

Side note, at the municipality I worked at before my current job, we were allowed a single repair (internal patch) on a tire on the police cruisers so long as it was an inch away from either side of the sidewall.

I though he had used an external plug...

And btw, he's got an 1/8" hole and an inch chuck taken out of the thread.

What makes us think the only damage is what's visible?

Very possible other damage was done, but a broken belt or otherwise compromised tire will usually show up as vibration or wobble. Visual signs would be a bulge in the sidewall or tread area.

The best bet with running a repaired tire would be to move it to the rear of the car incase of such a catastrophic failure due to unknown damage that could have occurred. Regardless of prior damage, manufacturer defect or FO damage while driving, it is best to not push the car to its limits on public roads due to those unknowns.

Hole that size would be a plug and patch on the inside. Run it all day long after that.

I had the same issue, it just puked sealant. I ordered a spare and a jack.

Most European cars that don't have a spare, use run flats as their tires. Don't know why they wouldn't do it with ours?
Quote from a BMW forum, "run flats are the devil" :).

To explain, a lot of folks feel that run flats ruin feel & handling for a sports oriented car (and they are pretty pricey I think).

Those who have jack and spare kits, a question or three if you don't mind:
1. Where did you get it and how much?
2. Are you happy with the quality?
3. Anybody just buy a jack and figure out how to live with a full sized spare in the trunk?

Those are mostly retread Semi tires. The worst thing that would happen to him is he'd be driving along and could possibly throw the plug. It landed right between the tread, I'd say that's the best possible place to have a successful plug. It's not like he's driving on Firestones :D

One good reason to have 24 hour roadside assistance, from Ford ESP or your insurance agency, etc. One of the worst things is to drive on a flat tire because it can damage the sidewall which can lead to a catostrophic failure. A patch is OK as long as it is more than inch away from the sidewall and the hole is no bigger than 1/4 inch. Plugs are meh solutions since you can't check the inside of tire unless it is unmounted from the wheel which likely didn't happen with a plug. Patch or plug though isn't likely going to fail in a big way, just another flat and the increased risk of more sidewall damage.

I threw together a small kit to "compliment" Ford's. Some plugs, plug tool and proper cement for tire plugs. I have learned over the years that these can be invaluable to at least get you to a tire shop. If it's an inch of more from the sidewall, I prefer, as someone else mentioned, the plug and patch from inside the tire. Plug first, allowed to seal, then a patch over it for good measure. I actually had a street tire on my 03 done one hour before taking it to the strip and it held perfectly! Yes, I left the tire on there, with the knowledge it could fail, intentionally instead of switching to DRs that night. It was T&T night and I was only running against the clock, so no one else to hurt but me, if it failed. The tire is still on the car almost two years later and I have yet to even have to add air. Of course, now I've probably jinxed myself:D
