It’s not a drag strip car so who gives a shit what it does there. And some magazine test driver isn’t driving that car better than Ford/Multimatic’s driver. GM needs to up their game and have a pro driver take the ZR1/X around the Ring and let’s see what it can do in the hands of a pro. My guess is they should be faster than the GTD given the power and weight advantage but TBD
can we be real for a moment?

we ALL care how well the GTD performs at the drag strip.

mite a Mustang. Drag times matter.
Yes it’s a track car foremost. But if Chevy can make a drag AND track car with the zr1, Ford/Multimatic can do it with the GTD.

we all want the Gtd to beat the zr1 at the track. But we also know having the engine over the wheels givrs the zr1 way better traction at the fundamental level. We won’t beat physics, So we settle for “competitive.”

regarding the pro driver bit, GM isn’t quite that honest with how it gets it’s numbers. Wouldn’t be surprised if a pro driver already put in a lap or two and was beat by the engineer who posted the best time.

if you remember the 2013 zl1, they stated they’d beat the gt500 acceleration via “simulations” and put together a Nurburgring time consisting of multiple runs and aplicibg tje best parts of each run together. That's why hameedi didn’t want to play that game on the ‘Ring with the gt500 at that time. No wants wants to compete against smoke and mirrors.

that said, I’m sure the zr1 X can go a bit faster. I also believe the Gtd Competition can touch the 6:3x’s.

I loved the below was part of the release for two reasons.

"Driven once again by Ford Racing and Multimatic factory driver Dirk Müller, the Mustang GTD Competition secured the sixth fastest time on the Nürburgring Pre-Production / Prototype Class leaderboard.

Proving just how capable the Mustang GTD Competition is, Ford Racing engineer Steve Thompson also piloted the GTD Competition to a time of 6:49.337 around the Nürburgring – faster than Müller’s original record. Thompson has modest driving experience at the "Green Hell," having cumulatively driven the Nürburgring fewer than 40 laps."

First, thanks for the shout out to the driver who set the record. Congratulations Dirk!

Second, way to let your engineer get after it. I know GM did too but that is actually a huge deal to me and I think it is probably rare now for a company to both acknowledge the people who put in the work and to be willing to risk their projects for their people. Obviously that engineer is a very talented driver and congratulations to them and the entire team. I'm sure he has done tons of laps in a simulator and the 40 laps they list is a bit of a cringy marketing angle for the ignorant. Still, Ford earned themselves credit from me by trusting and rewarding their employee. Having a pro there to set the record and then turning it over to the people who built the thing is exactly how it should be done in my book. Well done.

While I don't imagine this record will last too long, as these things never do, I still can appreciate the progress and the way that they approach it. I think American racing is back. I love the battle and where it will take us.

Honest question... Has there ever been a time when a mustang was compared to a corvette?

Yes, I know Jim Farley made the subtle "Game on" comment after chevy posted their time but even in the HPDE and Time Trials world, you have to do much more for a mustang to compete with a corvette.

Now, if Chevy developed a Camaro equivalent to that of the GTD...different story.

I really don't care much how it was done, with what tires, mods, etc. The fact that Ford is stepping up to the plate and delivering beyond Farley's comment of "Game On" is all we really need to know. I see the comments on the mid engine vette board and just chuckle. We can never recreate the horsepower wars of the late 60's, but this might just be the next best era ... or better.

Someone on Reddit postited that these could be the tires used on the GTD Competition.

Yes of course Mustang has been compared to Corvette many times over the years. Many people on here including me have owned both or at least test driven both.

I pray that the new Camaro comes out with a manual transaxle and an available LT6 NA screamer from the Z06. I could care less about the maximum power vehicle that few people will use as a car. I want something amazing that regular people can afford. Even if the Camaro got a manual transaxle and an LT1 6.2 engine it would be wonderful.

lol. Then I stand corrected. Carry on with ZR1(X) and GTD comparisons

Also, a lot of YouTube channels compared the C8 Stingray vs the Dark Horse. Not sure if any car magazines did, though.

honest question: was there ever a time tje mustang costed twice as much as the top of the line corvette? Or when Ford bragged about it was going to so much better than the corvette ever has by beating the best Porsche could muster?

answer: when the GTD became a thing.

the mustang and corvette are normally in two totally different categories. Ine is a stripped down sports car meant to do ine thing well - go fast. The other is a compromise, making tradeoffs to offer livability, convenience, and the ability two shoehorn four people in it if you need to.

but with the GTD, ford mixed up market placement with the pricing and the “race car made street legal” approach.

so no, the mustang and corvette are not competitors.

but the Mustang GTD, in fact, IS.

And now, finally, based on this update, it’s earning its stripes.

as a bonus, with the new Camaro coming out, ford will have to climb back down from fantasyland and make all mustangs grrat again - not just ones costing lambo money.

Don't flame me for this take. While I get and appreciate how it is a great thing that both Ford and Chevrolet are going back and forth, but did anyone hear about the MR Porsche 911 GT3RS record the same day? The Manthey Racing equipped GT3RS, with 518 horsepower and only the upgraded aero and suspension went 6:45.389 the very same day as the GTD Competition. Say what you will, but if we are praising the GTD Competition, which I get since we are supporting our Mustangs on a Mustang forum, but damn that Porsche time is impressive as heck! Who knows how much extra power the GTD Competition has over the the regular GTD to get down to 6:40, but the Porsche makes no engine performance changes for Manthey Racing. Something tells me that the upcoming GT2RS and the supposed next gen GT3 and GT3RS that IMHO will get the T hybrid turbo assist treatment, are about to tell both Chevy and Ford to "Hold my beer!" and go into the high to mid 6:30's with still less power than both. I am not the biggest Ring fan, but I do appreciate watching road racing and look at IMSA racing enjoying the GT Pro class with the Ford GT3 and C8 Z.R.
