Crap.

How are you looking to tackle that? Custom axles?

Or do you need to raise the drive unit higher?
Raising the drive unit higher isn't an option. It might solve the lower control arm issue but then I run into an issue with the upper camber arm. The main problem here is the drive unit is too wide for the ridiculously narrow S550 subframe...

I might try to modify the inner CV to reduce its length. I need at least 10mm plunge distance forward and aft for the CV so I might be able to reduce its length a bit. That coupled with some notching of the control arm might allow it to work. Good thing I have a spare control arm to mess around with...

Worst case scenario, its back to the drawing board on rear drive units... Might end up taking another look at the Model 3 RDU now that I have some additional info on its oiling system. Ill know by this weekend which direction to take...

Doesn't look all that big once you stack them nicely....

Final tally is 22 modules with good voltage and high isolation. 1 module is slightly out of balance so need to determine if its fixable or due to a weak cell. Load test next for that cell. Had to discard 4 modules due to loss of isolation. Not bad I think for a $900 purchase on eBay.

Just curious, I don’t recall seeing it posted, but what do each of those modules weigh?

In the event you (or others) have never heard of the speed record set by this Mustang or have never seen this vid, take the time to view it from start to finish.

You’ll hit some bumps as you work through your project, but this is inspiration for you, not that you need it because you’re doing damn great with this project and being a pioneer with it - but I want to see your S550 be the next “222”:.

enjoy:

Just about 30lbs each. So for a 21 module battery, 630lbs in modules. A 24 module battery would be 720lbs. Just estimating a casing around 100lbs for the time being would mean a roughly 750lbs battery at the minimum.

Could you do with the S550 rear what they did with the FOXE Mustang (go to like 0.59 in the vid and listen to what the owner says about the rear used):

That sure is an idea! One funky rear suspension design but extremely simple and gives a TON of room for motor. 800hp Plaid rear motor even…

Track width would need to be addressed but would be fairly simple to create a custom widened subframe.

Its a way to go for sure! But one of the things that make the S550 is the suspension including the rear subframe IMO

Yep, this is why I didn’t go with swapping in a Tesla subframe initially.

Hear me out (As someone who knows jack shit about motor size or really anything electric)...two smaller motors, mounted directly on the A-Arm. If you made the camber arm flat, could you fit a motor in there? Is it conceptually cool but functionally impossible?

Yep they do for a Tesla, not a Mach E drive unit from what I have seen thus far. What I will essentially try to do though is take the OEM inner CV and modify it to match the 930 dimensions as much as possible.
I guess I somehow missed that you are using a Mach E motor unit, I thought you were using a Tesla.

If the inner joint is a plunging 8 ball, like the Mustang unit, it can be shortened for sure. Do you have a picture of one without the boot?

That would be the ultimate setup. The issue is that drive units of that size and power density don't quite exist... Yet... The YASA 750R gets close and I actually looked at using two of these stacked in the center of the existing subframe. You need a motor with ALOT more torque to account for direct drive with no gear reduction. The issue was cost and availability... YASA has a newer version that is designed to replace the entire disk brake assembly that does 1000hp each. Lamborghini is currently testing these.

I believe it is identical to the Mustang cv unit. Once I get one disassembled, I'll post a few pics. I'm thinking based on the travel it currently has, I can get away will cutting about an inch off.

Plunging 8 ball as expected.
