Best radar detector for overall Protection

Christmas is coming up and my sister's and I wanna get my dad something that he can either place everywhere or just offers the best protection

I did check dood's thread, but he's looking $300ish, I want something better unless it works

That is a loaded and biased question. Any will work for K, KA and X-band radar...however LIDAR and Instant-On will nail you every time.

My personal opinion, arrows are hype. I don't give a damn which way the signal is coming from because I'm very cognizant of where I speed and know that any signal in those areas is worth slowing down for. Saving a few seconds or minutes off my time by knowing where the cop is doesn't affect my opinion.

Take a look at the Passport X70.

Redline is the range champ, Radenso Pro SE is the current contender (plus has GPS features for lock out and Camera locations). I own a Radenso Pro, Redline, Max2, V1, and an Escort Smartradar, thats the order I'd recommend them for my use.

That said, certain features can make one better for you than another, if in Virginia, Redlines the only choice on this list, in my wife's car I've got the Max2 since its plug and play and autolearns falses, in mine its the Radenso as it seems to be equal to the Redline and I can manually lock out falses. V1 is also fun for the arrows (and YAV1 app is really cool), but its range is noticeably less so I rarely use mine.

My bro in law bought a Max360 for like $650 just 3 weeks ago. Amazing reviews all over the place, rated best radar detector, Escort claims you will not get a ticket with this detector or they will pay the fine, false alert lockout, GPS, the works!

I've been wanting to get one (another actually, the other ride has a hardwired V1), but I'm concerned about it as a theft target since I have a convertible (so easy to cut the top and snatch a radar detector).

I guess my options are:

1) Pull it down and stash it anytime the car is in a potential theft situation

2) Get an "installed" version and spend $$$

I've seen some creative setups using a standalone detector, where they made a "secret" compartment in the trim at the top of the windshield, but that really varies between cars (and at the end of the day and installed version is probably not much more expensive).

As long as you are not in a super remote area with little traffic, the WAZE app is awesome. It is a community based app so if you are in a remote area, it probably isn't getting many inputs. I run a V1, but also have WAZE going and it is amazing how good people are about putting notifications of traffic, police, obstructions, etc.

If you want the Bentley/Rolls Royce go with the escort redline. Top of the Line:

If you want the Mercedes/BMW of detectors go with the V1. It’s the ugliest/loudest/Bulkiest, but it’s the gold standard for most street racers. Very good functionality.

Don’t go with anything cheaper. And this is for windshield detectors only. If you want to spend the big bucks for a bumper mount one then go ahead, but its gonna be well over $1000.

It's actually getting some poor reviews in independent testing; from poor range to buggy software.

They don't claim you won't get a ticket, just that they will pay for it in 2016. That wont' help with your insurance or points... Additionally if your state has alternatives like driving school in lieu of conviction of a speeding ticket, they don't pay for that.

Whatever radar detector you decide on, make sure you search the radar detector forums on how to fine tune the sweep ranges. I used my V1 for two years and it was a noisy SOB, but once I used some common custom sweeps it's been a lot more quiet.

+1. Most people tend to plug it in and go, never delving into the advanced features. Once you really get it setup well, it's a whole new ballgame.

I had a nice & fairly expensive Escort detector, but stopped using it after a little while, and it's been sitting in it's fancy case for years untouched. I find the best method is simply to use my own eyes and common sense. However, I'll admit that its trickier when the sun goes down. But I haven't had a ticket in many years (knock on wood). Not including a red-light-camera ticket.

I'll have to try that WAZE app, it sounds great.
