So my current exhaust consists of SW long tube headers, X pipe, and roush axle backs. I love how it sounds at slow cruise and idle but after about 2k rpm it just starts this crazy loud trumpeting and then actually gets quieter when it hits 3k. Cold starts are ridiculously obnoxious for the first minute or so as well and I have had lots of complaints from neighbors. So my questions are
A. Is this because of the axle backs?
1. If so, what should I get to give it a more mellow tone?
B. Is it the X pipe and should I switch to an H?
C. Would catalytic converters help?

I don't mind it being loud, it just don't want to scare the hell out of anyone in a half mile radius when I start it up or decide to shift after 2k

I would say swapping the axlebacks would be your best bet. Maybe ford touring or corsa sport? The Roush does not have much internal packing to quiet it down. Swapping to an H pipe would really only give you a slightly deeper tone. Cats would help, but it would be a pain to add some. Just my thoughts

Cats and vibrant resonators will do wonders. Volume will come down a bit, and the resonators will kill that 2k rpm drone (trumpeting).

go corsa sport catback for the double x or corsa touring ab. It'll still be loud just not as loud as the roush or corsa xtreme with headers

The problem is the stock exhaust is very quiet and a typical axleback is abnormally loud to compensate since many people only swap the mufflers and that gets the tone and volume up to par with what people expect to hear.

When you pair an axleback with headers and mid pipe you will have a very loud exhaust system. If you go with headers and a stock exhaust it should sound right but may be limiting performance.

So you have to find the combination that is right.....I despise loud exhaust. My C7 has 1000HP supercharged stroker motor with long tubes, no cats, and the stock axleback. Fortunately, I got the NPP exhaust which has valves I can open/close and with the valves closed it sounds very mellow but really awesome. With the valves open it sounds like I have no mufflers so I keep them closed almost all the time except when I am trying to break my halfshafts... ;-)

So with that said, I am not doing anything to the exhaust on the Mustang since it's the daily driver....I feel like a twin turbo setup on a completely stock head to toe car might be ideal.

Like Pinero61 said earlier, resonators. I have SW long tubes and 3" Flowmaster exhaust all the way back. Put a pair of resonators on yesterday and what a difference. Still sounds healthy, but totally tamed down the annoying peak drone.

Cats, resinators, and different mufflers are your only options to fix your volume problem.

Long tubes and no resonator, yup thats going to be loud haha. I would suggest putting a couple resonators in the exhaust, it will cut down the volume some and clean up the tone. We've done this on some custom builds with good results, also very popular with the f-150 guys running our catback and looking to tone it down some.

Yeah I have that exhaust on my 6.2 that thing is pretty much just 1 resonator compared to the stock muffler and resonator lol

How much is the tone going to change with resonators? My LT/Gibson setup has a rasp that almost sounds like a rattle at part throttle normal driving above 2k. I haven't tracked it down yet.

I ended up using the stock resonator and the Atak mufflers off my cat back set up. Nice and quiet cold start. It is still loud when I get on it but much deeper of a tone with no rasp (the resonator cut out all the rasp). I need to do a write up in this set up cause it's a great solution for those who want a decently quiet cold start but all the anger possible when wot.

I'm gonna end up buying the borland resonator I think though just to cut down on weight. Hope it won't attached too much volume but a little more wouldn't hurt. The stock resonator really cut down the cold start scream everyone with catless LT's knows all too well.
