Calling all benchracers: why is the BMW M4 so much faster?

the BMW M4 has 425hp/406tq, which is nearly the same as the mustang. It weighs 200 pounds less which is substantial, but here's the kicker. It runs a 12.0-12.2 @ 117+mph. Almost every mustang GT review I've ever seen has managed a 12.8-13.0 from the mustang. Where is that .6-.8 seconds disappearing from? The 200 pounds of weight can't account for all of it.

FYI on a road course an M is barely faster than a Stang. Ms have DCT and launch control with turbos (much greater low end torque off the line). Those are huge advantages.

M4 is a turbo engine right? It probably makes more power down low I guess.

Stock tires and the weight-savings combined might do it. I think they use Michelin Pilot Super Sport and some kind of Continental. Now, I don't know if those are better than Pirelli P-Zero's by much, but they probably are because the Pirelli's are crap.

Look at peak power, the dyno's on an m4 are pretty impressive. I raced one the other night from 5-80mph, I got the hit and kept him at my rear wheel the whole time. He was starting to pull back and would have had me most likely if the race went much longer. I just didn't want to exceed the speed limit by 50 mph to see.

The BMW puts those numbers down to the ground, bonestock. Their crank numbers are actual numbers to the rear wheels.

We have members here on the forum that have run 12.4x-12.5x @113-115mph bonestock. Good air, too.

BMWs have a history of being faster than the numbers on the paper indicate they would be.

The engine is stronger, it's lighter, and its transmission is better.

Like others stated, the output is much higher than the claimed figures.

I think intake tune and exhaust (headers if you want to be sure ) will put the M4 in its place behind the mustang on a straight line.

I would call the stock Mustang a "fun car", easy to toss, decent acceleration, and finally an acceptable brake package. I would call the M4 a good, affordable "performance car" all things being relative. If you want a good performance car in a Mustang package start moding and avoid M's, Corvettes, most Audi's (who really get the most out of HP numbers), etc. until you do. I know most people think I'm BS'ing but my wife's Genesis R Spec would outrun our S550 in a stoplight to stoplight race with only 430HP pulling a 4000lb+ car. My son's old moderately modded STi would have sucked the headlights out of it in a stoplight to stoplight race. The first time I took him for a ride in the S550 his comment was that it was better but "you've got some work to do". I love the looks of the new Mustang and it makes a very nice platform if you're into making changes to go faster. If you're out roaming the streets in a stock S550 be careful who you pick on.

The only things that matter with any of those possible situations of quick races are driver skill, who gets the hit and traction.

The coyote 5.0 has been around since 2010 and is a proven runner in stock form if one knows how to drive. Stop light to stoplight would be close as they both have similar 0-60 times but GT would walk in a roll or 1/4 mile situation.
The stock 11-15 GT stang stock on stock tires is capable of 12.6-13.2@ 108-115, depending on air, track prep and driver skill...
Going by the sotp aka butt dyno(prob what your son is doing)these cars don't ''feel'' nearly as quick as they actually are...
There is a lot more skill going from a dig (stoplight to stoplight). Go from a roll to show the true power to weight comparison...
