Mustang “Mach 4” trademarked by Ford

Why does ford overwhelmingly feel the need to dilute their catalogue of historical names? Did anyone tell them it's okay to come up with something new?

I’m not in the market for a four door sedan. That said anything that Ford does to bring back a “car” is fine by me. The only Mustang I care about is mine. The rest is just Internet forum BS.

Oh just stop already. You know that's not happening. People buy names they recognize or, at least, have some familiarity with. Fairlane, Futura, seriously? Who the heck are going to buy these. And a new design. Yeah, maybe in a truck or a SUV, but a car............Well how about a Mach 4?

It’s all marketing. Mustang is a brand now, whether we like it or not. Ford is going to capitalize on that (see Mach E). I know a few Mach E owners in my neighborhood and they’re proud to be a “Mustang owner” (they tell me almost every time I see them). Whether we think it’s a Mustang or not, Ford says it is and they’ve probably gotten more sales with the Mustang name on it than they otherwise would have. Heck, we’ve had a few show up to some of our local Mustang club outings the last few summers.

I wouldn't mind a four door that is a 'different design' from the s550 or s650, buy call it the Mach 4 (as mentioned above) and keep the horse logo off the car. That's what they should have done with the Mach E. Call it that and do away with the horse. The vast majority of people that hear the work 'Mach' associated with a car think of the Mustang, anyway, so no need to have that name or logo on the car.
