Pulled over in california for not having cats

I live over in Sonoma and just curious how the cop knew you did not have cats? No way he could know that to initiate a car stop. Wondering what his probable cause to stop you was. Is your car absurdly loud? How did he determine you did not have them? I’m interested to know how that went down. Also, wondering how many E85 stations you have over in Vacaville since I think we only have one in my entire county that sells it. Seems pretty limiting on where you can get fuel.

It's pretty easy to get caught without them, the smell alone is a dead give away especially in town a little harder on the highway.

I have the 2m cat deletes. I'm more worried about getting state reffed. If that cop wanted to he could have had me go to CARB and get inspected. When I have to smog I'll put stock cats back on.

As I understand the law, if your vehicle came out with cats from the factory, it has to have them even if you're in a state that doesn't have emission testing. All emission related equipment/components must remain on the vehicle if you're in the United States (including Hawaii, but they don't enforce it).

I have the GESI Gen 2 UHP cats from Kooks ( they rebrand them as their Ultra Green or HO Green Cats. I'm on 2.9 whipple making between 786 and 819 whp and have used various fuels from Ms109, Sunoco 260 GT plus, pump ethanol, as well as Sunoco pump 93/94 with boostane.
Been trouble free for years now without any issues or CEL.
We also run the same cats on our 1070 whp hellcat without issue.
The key to keeping them alive to is to make sure COT (cat over temp protection) remains enabled in the tune and do not use any type of 2 step.
They definitely do a good job of taming down the fumes of 93 octane in the winter and help eliminate most of the rasp from the exhaust note.
As other have mentioned, you can have them vbanded to make swapping in/out easy.

He smelled it at a stop light when i was heading to the gym lol. We have quite a few e85 stations here. I have 2 stations 10mins from my house. It's just not worth getting state reffed when I drive it all the time in town. Hoping I can keep these cats alive.

He said he was going to put them back on so how would they know? Yes, everything SMOG related has to stay the way it is. All the way down to oil separators. California would rather you burn the oil and send it back into the atmosphere than capturing it and removing it from the equation.

CA doesnt care about smog. If they did, they would only care about what comes out the tailpipe. When they started the diesel smogs, I knew it was just a money grab. They only plug in to the obd port to see if anything was changed.
I left my programmer on stage 6 and still passed.

Doesn’t matter if you think the laws make sense, officers take an oath to enforce the laws. Could he have let it slide? Sure, but he’s just doing his job whether you or anyone else agrees with it or not. Heck, he might not even agree with it for all we know.

And I do agree that running no cats in CA isn’t smart, was bound to get caught at some point.

Hmm I might be in the same boat as OP but in Virginia LOL. The smell is very noticeable not to mention the insane scream above 2k rpms. Local cops pretty much ignore me but state troopers might give me shit
