Discussing maintenance with another M1 owner at a recent car show. He advised to use Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic and Mobil 1 M1-212A oil filter was better than Motorcraft 5w30 and the OEM Motorcraft oil filter FL500-S. Didn’t give a good reason other than Mobil 1 products exceeds anything Motorcraft produces. I would think OEM would be the best since the 5.0 was developed by Ford. I’m currently using Motorcraft oil and filter. Thoughts on Mobil 1 oil Filters?

Lets put it this way. Oem designed it for specific use and also specific longevity in mind. Not necessarily for hard racing nor for 500k miles.

Mobil 1 also is a good manufacturer but from what I heard a while ago online, a basic oil

Realistically all oils and filters unless its some china nonesense will be good enough to be ok. If you wanna get into the gnitty griddy, motorcraft seems to make really good filters, arguably by most the best compared to other companies. Oil wise, motorcraft isnt the best and mobile isnt either. Both are quality but neither have as many additives as other brands

I personally use castrol edge, but liquimoly is probobly the “best oil” but personally i cant justify their prices

Specific to filters, there are some good tear-down and comparison videos on-line, along with discussions, like at Bob The Oil Guy.

Many filters are made for specific purposes. For example, one might be a high-flow, low-restriction filter, for racing. Another, might be made for long service intervals. Still others might favor synthetics. Internally, to include the media, they might all be just a bit different. Not necesarily better or worse, just suited for those purposes.

Regarding manufacturers, I've found that the same filter design someone gravitated to years ago might not be the same any more. The company might have changed the gasket, filter media or core material. Other manufacturers might have moved operations to a cheaper facility. Or upgraded other filters to something better. Many commenting on a brand in a negatively light often do without proof, other than a single instance they heard of or read on a forum years ago.

Whatever you think now, study some videos and select what you think is appropriate. Motorcraft, the oil and the filter, is in use in tens of millions of vehicles today. I've not read of common issues or concerns. Many GT350 and GT500 owners seek out and use Motorcraft filters *exclusively.

For oil maker, weight and type, whatever you select, it's best to stick with that oil. You can change over the long-term, but I wouldn't change often. I've confirmed through my own oil changes, analysis and Blackstone's comments, changing the oil from one to another, one in different properties, doesn't happen with one oil change, but over several. If you're changing the brand, weight or type often, you end up with a kludge of oil properties and characteristics.

The Owners Manual is the baseline. Always use products that meet or exceed the stated standard.

If buying products on-line, purchase items from established, well-known and reviewed companies.

* In an example of how filter designs change over time, some newer versions of some filters, some PN#s are not using metal-backed cores; they rely on cardboard materials. Buyers are often aware of this, and seek out the older designs.

I believe Mobil 1 is the best mainstream engine oil (some people say Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is better, who knows), because I've heard over and over that they have the highest "synthetic" content of these mainstream oils. I don't know the synthetic content % of Motorcraft (and I don't know the % in Mobil either, ha!) But I've used it in every car for decades, it's like $27/5qts at Walmart and to rub it in, I've never developed the Coyote type writer tick lol.

Filters publish their specifications and you can choose what you want, but the features of oil filters are not all the same. A premium filter should have anti-drainback and a bypass, Motorcraft has both, but so does every other premium filter. I like Donaldson, who cares!

I think either combo is fine, but I don't believe Motorcraft has the edge on anything personally...

I just went through this...I used Mobil One oil in both the GT and my 2000 Viper GTS.

I used to use the M1 filters in the Viper, but recently did some homework. Seems that the current versions of the Mobil One filters aren't what the old ones were. Seems that the version that end in "A" are the lesser filters. I switched to Purolater Boss filters for the Mopars. I stick with Motorcraft in the Fords.

I’ve tried many different filters in the last 55 years. Based my experience I find this filter the best overall for me on my 2016 Roush or other cars I own!

My experience, the Mobil 1 oil filters have a super thin wall. Do NOT tighten them using an oil filter wrench, or you could weaken the wall of the filter causing it to leak. An oil changing place did this and it leaked on me. Luckily, I discovered the leak before the engine lost too much oil. It only lost about 1/2 quart of oil. However, the oil that leaked caused a huge mess on the bottom of the car and I spent several hours taking things off and cleaning underneath.

Do yourself the favor, if you are gonna use Mobil1 oil, fine, but buy yourself an Amsoil oil filter instead. Part#EAO17 for my 2017 Mustang GT convertible. I assume all the S550's take the same oil filter, but double check to be sure.

I had this same experience with the Mobil 1 oil filter. The quick oil change outfit crushed it while installing and didn't tell me about it. I then drove the car about 400 miles and discovered the leak after the trip. Luckily, I only lost about a quart of oil. I now use the Ford Racing CM6731FL82 High Performance oil filter. It holds more oil, has a very thick wall and has the bypass valve at the threaded end of the filter instead of the opposite end like most others. If this filter ever goes into bypass it won't be circulating dirty oil back into the engine.

Here is a bit of secret shopper knowledge for you. The Fram Synthetic FE10575 is the same filter as the Amsoil EAO17. Aside from a different paint job, it doesn't cost 17 dollars + shipping and you can pick it up at Walmart.

Check out the specs for the filters. I wouldn't use a Motorcraft filter. Mobile 1 is one of the better filters.

I think the frequency you change you're oil is more important than what oil. Most modern oils and filters are pretty good these days. It's trying to push the change intervals that does the harm. I personally change mine every 5000 miles, or after a hard weekend on the track.

I like the idea of the Ford Racing oil filter that you mention.
