2018 Oil Filter question.

I just changed the oil on my new 2018 GT with around 850 miles on it. The filter I removed looked like this. It’s shorter than the Motorcraft FL-500-S that I replaced it with. What gives? The factory must buy bulk.

Yeah, it's been mentioned a few times. The factory filter seems to be an odd size between the 500 and 820 filters. I'd love to find if its purchasable any place.

Pretty normal for factory to use smaller cheaper filters.

I just decided to switch to Mobil 1 filters. They're a couple dollars more at $10, but they are noticeably heavier duty, and are easily found at Walmart.

Noticeably how? Being heavier or having a thicker shell doesn't really mean much. Internally they are not really much better. Motorcraft is a rather solid brand when it comes to oil and filters.

The shell and gasket are both thicker. It feels more like a racing filter that is made to handle a little more pressure. The filter element is also one of the better ones on the market when you tear them apart and compare them. Standard MC filters are basically a Purolator filter, since I believe they are made by them. They're also good quality filters. I've never heard of a standard FL-500S MC filter failing on an NA engine. That said, if I was to boost or track the car regularly, I would get the Mobil 1 over the regular MC. Needed? Not really. Mainly just for an extra bit of overkill.
