Hi Guys,

Sorry I know there have been other threads, here and other Mustang groups. I've looked through all and decided this seems the best;

1. Drain radiator -- 5/16" hose attached to petcock run to bucket
2. Remove thermostat from housing and replace housing (first pull lower radiator hose to drain fluid so won't drip on serpentine belt).
3. Fill using vacuum filler kit with distilled water
4. Open petcock (have hose to drain to bucket)
5. Run engine for 15 seconds
6. Drain radiator
7. Repeat 1-->6 till running clear -- 5-8 gallons of distilled water based on other threads
8. Replace thermostat
9. Final fill with concentrate to finish with 50/50 mix.

Question -- will there be no more than 1/2 the 15,6 quart capacity left in the system so I can achieve 50/50 concentration on the last fill?

This seems the most expedient method, no need for the thermostat to open as it's been removed, thus not dealing with waiting an hour for fluid to cool.

Thoughts? Comments?

Thanks all!

Good idea to perform multiple flushes u til the distilled water is clear. I used a vacuum extraction/fill kit on mine and filled it with the new Yellow premixed Motorcraft fluid which is compatible with the factory orange. The color in the coolant reservoir is a little different looking because of the mixture of the two coolants, but I didn’t want to go through the hassle of repeated flushing.

I should note that I also removed my freeze plugs and got all of the fluid out of my heads that way before installing the MMR Head Cooling Mod. I never thought to remove the thermostat as you mentioned. It’s actually a good idea.

Please let us know how your method works out for you. It never hurts to see/hear of different ways to accomplish something.

Using distilled water just to flush the remaining coolant out is a waste of $$$ IMO.
NOT a dig at you however.

Is that the crossover hose at the back of the engine?

Don't you have to pull the engine to do that?

What method did you use to pull the plugs?
The engine doesn’t need to be pulled for this mod.

I did mine when the tranny was out for a clutch upgrade and tranny build. I used a hammer and long flathead screwdriver to knock the freeze plugs loose, to where they were sitting at an angle and then pulled them out with a pair of pliers.

There are some people, who claim to have done the install with the tranny in place. However, I personally think it would be too tight with the tranny in and believe it’s best to do if/when the tranny gets removed.

Sounds terrifying.

I have a mod friendly dealer. He would probably approve this mod if I had to have the trans out for some reason.
They also make a cylinder head oil mod. I bought that one too, but didn’t install it, as it does require the engine to be out of the car (or the cylinder heads off) because there is no room to knock out the even smaller freeze plugs and press in the fittings.

Why need a vacuum filler kit to add fluid?
