Short throw shifter options for a non-racer

I'm trying to think if there's even any cars & coffee events around me... I'm finding that living in Jersey within the shadow of NYC has become oddly devoid of certain things. Like Dr Pepper Cherry Zero is available in every major metro market but here. Pawn shops just aren't a thing, so I never find the cool guitar deals people online say they find. Just weird stuff.

My 2c worth. Just buy the Steeda Triax Street short shift with the Steeda shifter bracket and a weighted shift knob. Not so much money but you will be a happy camper.

However, those are significantly more expensive as well as likely majorly overkill since my daily speedster will not be hitting the track.

not true. Full Tilt Boogie makes a bracket that mounts the shifter directly to the trans. $100 bucks. The shifter really isn't that bad it's the mounting to the body and flimsy rubber bracket / bushing that's the problem. you don't have to spend $600 to fix this.

I can't give you a side-by-side comparison, since my only experience is with the OEM-to-MGW change, and it sounds like you can't physically sample the various options, so you'll have to weigh the opinions posted here and decide which way you want to go.
As a [retired] programmer/analyst, I admire your logical approach, and your ability to restrain yourself, although having a wife and kids might have something to do with that.

I had the same issue getting through the website and that’s why I went with steeda. Now I wish I went with this. In fact I think I’ll be ordering one to swap in

I see a good chunk of positive feedback on the Steeda for street use, any reason you're not satisfied with it? Still having high speed lockouts or something?

Yeah, it's frustrating how often things "exist" on the Internet but don't become tangible until money has been spent. I'm an IT SysAdmin that used to work in the musical instrument sales industry and it's actually really frustrating how many things in both worlds are just not available in person, even at big box stores like Sam Ash and Guitar Center. Guitar is a world where a fraction of a millimeter difference in neck shape can completely change the feel of the guitar.

With the shifter thing it's fortunately less nuanced. The stock shifter "works" but feels loosey goosey to me and the 3-4 shift is a bit sloppy whether I'm driving like a grandma or punching it.

My '15 came to me with a transmission-mounted short-throw shifter already installed, although I never was able to get up under the car to identify which one and the previous owner never responded to any questions, but a lot of other parts in the car seem to have come from American Muscle so I can guess it was the Barton. My '12 was 100% bone stock and died an untimely death right after I actually received a Barton short-throw shifter for that (which I actually still have, unused, in the box) which I intended to install because the 1-2 shift was always a little funny and I had to develop this double bounce to get it to hit 2nd securely. My '94 GT was the only other car I had before that which was stick and... I don't remember which short throw shifter my brother installed when he owned the car.

As far as my wife, I'm stupidly lucky that she gets why I love Mustangs (as well as my overly-large collection of guitars for a guy not currently in a band) and supports me having them. The only concession I ever made was that my '06 V6 convertible was automatic because holding a binky in a kid's mouth is hard when you're trying to shift. LOL The kids are 8 and 14, now, so that's much less of a concern. LOL

My one brother and my father were the racers in the family, although neither of them have had a Mustang for a while. My other brother has an '09 GT and he's in the same sort of situation that I am where he wants improvements but doesn't need to go all out for racing.

But, I guess to turn it back around to my intent for the thread, I'm just looking to tighten things up and keep it simple and budget friendly. The FTBR bracket certainly leaves things open for the future, but I could also swap and sell what I get now if I ever find myself in a situation where I really need to have the shifter transmission mounted (which is unlikely).

With the upgraded transmission mount it would probably be perfect but since I am running the stock rubber mount the trans moves on hard acceleration still. The steeda mount can’t solve this problem because it doesn’t tie into the transmission itself. So on the 2-3 I still hit the side of the gate on hard acceleration. It no longer locks me out but slows the shift way down and isn’t very confidence inspiring.

Gotcha. I think this is why MGW is so popular. It's pricier than buying a more aggressive bushing and bracket, but sorts everything all in one go.

Yes. I had a first gen MGW installed and it was just a little too loud for my liking so I removed it and went with the steeda bracket. My hope is this will be a great middle ground. I think the new MGws are better and quieter.

OK... So, I've been watching a few videos on installations and I'm realizing something...

AND THIS IS TOTALLY ON ME!

All of the handle replacements (outside of the Boomba) seem to require getting under the car and disassembling everything anyway, huh? Lord, what a PITA!

So, for everybody saying go with MGW, I think I see a big reason why, now. You're under there anyway, almost pulling the whole thing out regardless... Why not just swap the whole thing, right?

Or do I just go with the Boomba? [when it's back in stock...]
