After having a shop replace the seals on my differential, i started hearing some clunking noises from the suspension, and my steering wheel wasn't centered, so I brought the car in for a check-up. They noticed that the steering rack had a large crack in it.

Anyone have any idea how this could have happened? There isn't any damage anywhere else on the car.
Also, is the replacement steering rack Mach 1 specific, or will any 2018+ S550 steering rack work?

(Hello)

Sorry you had to make your first post with a problem.

My initial thought is that, during the work being performed, the repair team selected that area as a jacking point by mistake. Or, a jack or tool they were using slipped while repairs were being made, with the force of that object striking the column.

To break the column in a driving accident, I'd think there'd have to be additional tells and other damage.

I can't help you on the part number, but we have a sponsor, @LevittownFordParts . I've mentioned them here. Give them a bit. They might be able to provide assistance on identifying the correct replacement parts.

I tend to agree. I see that the OP is in the UAE so I'm not sure how successful he can be with a resolution with the folks that worked on his car...if that is that is the case. In the US I would go back to the shop that did the work and attempt to get them to fix the issue, if it is deemed they indeed created the issue.

Was the car a prior “salvage” S550 brought over from the US? Seems like a lot of S550’s wrecked here in the US are then imported overseas for a cheap fix and alternative to owning an S550.

I have not seen or heard of any S550 EPAS units being cracked like that without any prior impacts from road debris, driver inflicted damage by hitting an immovable object like street curbing or cement barriers with the wheels, careless jack points (as mentioned above) or accident damage.

In any case, if that Mach 1 was purchased new by the current owner, and if it does not have any accident history, that should be replaced under warranty through Ford. Now unless they find any prior negligence, that may negate a warranty repair and replacement.

That caught my attention as well. I'm not sure what that area should look like, but it is suspect. The disc seems to protrude, but then maybe putting a jack at that location deformed whatever that disc is, creating the protrusion.

That's looks like an injection runner site. This where the molten aluminum flows into the mold. They are cut off after the part is ejected. There can be several of these on large cast metal parts.

I don't speak Arabic, but I appreciate the gesture nonetheless! Thanks for mentioning them, I had already checked on their website, but it lists a few part numbers, and I'm not sure which one to use.

I had this thought as well, but unfortunately the shops here don't take responsibility, and you can't do anything about it. It also seems unlikely given that the crack is right in the center of the car and there wouldn't be any reason for them to jack it up from there even if they could.

No accidents, clean title, haven't done anything dumb like climbing a curb yet, the car has 8900 miles right now. They don't sell the Mach 1 with a Tremec here, so I did have to import it, but it was imported with 0 miles. I didn't cheap out, wanted to avoid issues like this 😢.

If it was imported with 0 miles and now you only have 8900 miles on it, wouldn't this be covered under warranty?

It should be - definitely under the Ford 3/36 bumper to bumper UNLESS there’s a compelling reason not to…

The Ford dealership doesn't warranty imports. Is there another warranty that I'm unaware of, other than the dealership provided one?

They don’t warranty imports? It’s a Ford vehicle being serviced at a Ford shop. Maybe I’m not aware of the rules for overseas repairs - but that seems awfully strange.

If the car is not GCC spec, they will refuse to work on it. There is only one Ford dealer here (Al Tayer Motors) and they sell base model EcoBoost mustangs for $50,000, and don't offer options (like a manual transmission).

So, a lot of people just buy salvage title imports instead, but some (like myself) import new ones because they don't have the options we want. There's no differentiation between those two.

The car was brand new?? A lot of cars of UAE are imported from Copart, totaled or highly damaged.

For searching parts on the Levittown site, from the main page, look to the right where it displays a blue button with "Ford Repair Parts". Click the button then choose the "Search by VIN" option where you input your VIN to find the exact parts that fit your specific vehicle.
