When I see “the driver of a truck killed three people” headlines I can almost assure you it was actually “the driver of a pickup killed three people”… truck drivers are some of the safest drivers to be around on our roadways. Give us a little respect please.

The prices definitely vary quite a bit surprisingly! @MROCGUY its about the same here in Colorado for a new Mustang windshield; just shy of the $500 mark. I was truly amazed that I got a new Viper windshield only a few weeks later and cheaper than the Mustang at about $385. Crazy but it probably comes back to the supply and demand for the local area.

I’m confused… why would you pay full price instead of having insurance cover it? I’ve had to replace Mara’s windshield twice since I’ve gotten her and never paid more than 75 for the deductible covering an OEM shield.

AZ is horrible as well when it comes to dirty roads, laden with rocks, glass, and debris. I am continually amazed at the morons in lifted trucks with no flaps spending half their time on the shoulder because they have a text that just cant wait given how important they are. And the uncovered rock trucks hauling yard gravel to the unlimited numbers of shitty cookie cutter housing developments springing up. You can tell I’m not bitter at all about road rocks.

I can't accurately describe how much I appreciate this post. But to be a devils advocate, I'd like to acknowledge that the last rock chip I received was from @fmc_smt in his lowered 2015. Sometimes sticky tires grip, sometimes they spit.

He's probably talking about contemptuous yahoos in lifted trucks who act like morons. That said, I'm a certified DOT examiner and CDL holders I meet are always respectful and grateful - even when I give them bad news and tell them they need to get their BP under control or get a sleep test, etc., etc. Plus, CDL holders are held to much higher standards if they get pulled over driving a personal vehicle.

Maybe you are. But sorry. Many box truck and 18 wheeler rig drivers are morons.
The advent of dash cameras in vehicles and you tube show just how many big truck drivers need their CDL pulled ASAP.

It's actually quite the same here, we have a lot of underpaid and overstressed box truck drivers that just ignore the little city car on their left when changing lanes. Only thing you can do is SLAM on the brakes.
Also, they spend a lot of time on the center lane to overtake 1 km/h at a time another slightly slower truck.

But I must say usually they are from western Europe and are heavily exploited by their employers, I can't really blame them they are already enduring enough. I know a few local truck drivers and I have a great deal of respect for them, they are nice and attentive people and the work is really hard. Also the condition of the trucks varies by the country on the license plate.

I appreciate this posting. I will be the first to admit that I used to want to smack the $#}T out of big rig drivers, but I have learned that if you are respectful and acknowledge the fact that the driver is in a HUGE vehicle, giving them the right of way to change lanes will probably get you a courtesy wave and some good will down the road. If I'm flying up on a group of trucks, I normally just slow down a bit because I *know* one of them is going to pass the other. When I see their blinker, I'll slow further and flash my lights so they can get over. Seems to help them get back over a lot sooner.

Never really felt that way until I saw two big rigs dueling with each other on a two lane highway at 80 mph... I was about 3 cars behind them when one got over to pass the other. When he got next to the other one he lost control a bit and swerved towards the median (was off the pavement) and then back onto the road and into the other guys lane. That guy swerved off the pavement and purposely did the same thing to the other guy. They did this MULTIPLE TIMES until the guy passing slammed on his brakes and pulled over. My buddy and I were like WTF are they doing... I slowed down immediately and gave them plenty of space. I honestly thought I was going to have to call 911 for a meat wagon.

Weirdest thing was driving through OK City one year and I was following a truck with timber on a trailer and the trailer lost a wheel and tire. That was fun, the driver didn't notice it fly off the back axle while he's doing 70. I was right behind him and had to slow down to keep pace with it. Everyone behind me laid on their horns because I was in front and they couldn't see what was going on. One car blew past me and flipped me off then realized oh... Damn... I see why you are going 35 mph in a 70... He slowed back down and rolled down his window to apologize while we waited (and waited) for that rim and tire to take an exit... It probably rolled for a mile or more.

On that note, never had a rock chip from a big rig but I certainly have from lifted trucks!

I think this used to be more true than it is now. I know a lot of very good, professional drivers but I also know there are a lot of poor drivers out there. Sometimes it is a lack of training or shady training (Google Humboldt tragedy), sometimes the companies they work for don’t prioritize safety, and some drivers are just plain jerks.

Best bit of driving I ever witnessed in person was done by a bus driver named Anthony when I was on a tour of Italy. I don’t recall which city we were in at the time, Rome I think. Very tight spot with traffic in both directions and we were trying to make a turn onto a side street. It took about 5 minutes to execute, lots of small, back and forth moves, but everyone on board gave Tony a standing ovation when we made the turn and got back under way at speed.

I used to have a lot of faith in semi drivers, but it seemed like when mass labor layoffs started happening in our area 15-20 years ago, truck driving school became the de facto career of choice for many as it was a quick way to a paycheck.

Knowing a couple of the people who went that route, I no longer have any faith in semi rigs and steer clear as much as possible.

Living in SE MI, every other yahoo owns a big dodge ram pickup as dodge will lease to anyone with a pulse, can't tell you how much I despise those hideous pieces of garbage.

Update.

turns out I had a $500 deductible on my glass which I overlooked til now. Oem is 1k give or take. Aftermarket is 500. Its highly likely that I will run into more pebbles down the road. I’m undecided. Thoughts on aftermarket vs oem appreciated.

I'd call insurance and play dumb making sure you have glass coverage before TRYING to start a claim. Wait a few weeks or whatever before you make the claim after that. Some insurance companies suck and don't automatically include glass up front which I find complete bs. Happened to me with my last car when I used to have progressive. I played dumb when I called in just to make sure before I attempted a claim at which point the crack wasn't even as bad as yours on the passenger side. Waited till it cracked all the way across before I got it replaced.

I’m afraid the cat’s out of the bag. I thought I had it so I called to ask for a claim. In hindsight I should’ve checked first. I forgot I changed insurance when I moved to Texas from FL.

I feel the pain.

I ordered my new ecoboost in April of 2022, it finally arrived in October. To say I was anxious was an understatement. I've been mostly happy with the car, particularly MPG. That's why I bought it.

Within the first 2 days of ownership it had 4 rock pecks in the windshield and one on the RH Rear quarter panel. All, due to trucks. I try to stay away from them anyway but it doesn't matter, they dump part of their load on the highway and other cars pick em up and toss them about. And my "new" car is the target.

I know, it's just an ecoboost but it's the first new car I have ever owned in my almost 50 years of existence. And, the first 2 days all this happens.

Could be worse I'm sure. I mean, I could own a corvette. Nah, I'm not one of "those guys". I can't own one.
