What's the consensus on the replacement for the OEM battery? My '17 R with 2800 miles will be needing a replacement by spring. Wondering on what brands and specs seem to work well.

I would suggest OEM motorcraft. When mine is needing replacement thats what i am doing. I always used Optima Red top on all my stangs in the past, but not sure if im gonna do that this time.

The OEM motorcraft is pretty lacking on CCA, since they instead opted for weight savings on the GT350s. I switched to a Costco battery for a Mustang GT and the couldn't be happier. I didn't have any issues with it fitment.

If the additional weight is a concern, then I would suggest something like AntiGravity ATX20.

Don't forget to do the BMS (battery management) re-learn service!

Regarding battery BRANDS, like @monte87 did above, I also replaced the OEM Motorcraft battery in my 2019 GT350 with a new Motorcraft battery, so I don't have any experiences to share regarding alternate brands. As you may already know, there are various posts within this forum regarding battery issues that may offer insights on different brands, such as Optima or Antigravity, that others prefer, as well as a section "Mechanical Maintenance and Servicing" that may offer some helpful thoughts/recommendations.

However, referencing SPECS, I definitely wanted to increase the mediocre 390 CCA contained in the original battery to as high a CCA capacity as I could go within a 96R series Motorcraft battery, which was a 590 CCA battery, to ensure for no fitment or electrical compatibility issues, while providing increased starting power. The additional weight (approximately 6 pounds, as I recall) of the new battery was not a concern to me. I'm very satisfied with the replacement. It will all come down to what your concerns and priorities are.

As @MiamiGT350 above noted, be sure to check out the info at that link and on other posts regarding the BMS reset procedure if you replace the battery yourself.

You may also want to consider buying a Battery Tender, such as CTEK, if you don't already have one if your 350R is not driven for extended periods, assuming you have access to a nearby 110V electrical outlet. Other posts are available on this subject as well.

Good luck with whatever you decide! (Nice collection of performance vehicles, by the way.)

Ha...didn't think anyone noticed that kind of stuff!. I drove and tracked the z/28 for 2 years and then cashed in during the COVID price run and sold it for 150% of what I bought it for. Finishing up a '66 FB stang street/track car and have an Active Performance '66 GT40 project on the way.

I thought I had read that the BMS won't be able to manage anything over what it is calibrated for stock? So, is it worth getting a battery with more power if the BMS isn't going to be recalibrated?

With the right scan tool you can tell the BCM that you've installed a different battery and it'll reset to zero and then manage the new battery appropriately.

I don't have a scan tool.

AntiGravity. If I hadn’t gone this route, I would have most likely looked into Odessy as a second.

Keep a GT350R as original as possible…..get a Motorcraft. I would also keep the original battery.
