This is my first post so thanks for the add. Today, as my wife says I officially started my midlife crisis. I purchased a 2017 Mustang GT with 2500 miles. The sun visor the car currently has in it does not have the garage door opener. I would like to know if anyone knows whether or not I can install a visor with an opener? I saw some posts about the visors but did not see anything specific. I would appreciate any help you guys or gals can give me. Thanks in advance !!!

The opener that is installed in the visor is an analog unit, meaning it is stand alone and pulls power from the lighted mirror. The good news is that since it is stand alone, it is not tied into the can-bus and does not interact with any other system on the car. So in the end it is basically plug n play, just swap and go.

The down side is the visor with the opener may be slightly different in color, shape, or even the clips that it uses. Ford has done it before.

When ford introduced the third gen focus in 2012, the titanium trim came with and opener in the visor as standard equipment. But in 2013 ford decided to delete the opener entirely from the focus lineup. Well the wife had a 12 focus titanium with the opener, and my daughter had a 13 focus SE without it but she wanted one. I bought a 12 visor with the opener in it to install in her car and when I tried, the rod inside the visor was smaller and would not clip into the holder near the rear view mirror so I ended up buying a 2012 clip to go with the 12 visor. Once the new clip and visor was installed, they did not match the passenger side, so I had to buy the passenger side clip and visor from a 12 also. I only paid about 100 bucks for everything. The parts are not expensive, just be aware you may need more than just a visor.

Since you have a 17 without the opener and ford offered the opener on a mustang in 17 (mine has one) there is a good chance you can get away with just the visor. Just make sure you get one for a 17 in case there were small changes from year to year.

Just looked it up, the visor w/o the opener is 77 bucks new. With the opener it is 277 bucks. You might be better off trying to find a used one from a junkyard or off ebay. They are not cheap like they were 8 years ago.

You can get a keychain fob that will work with your opener. Cheaper than $277. Just have to program it. My opener came with two of them but I’m sure you could buy them from eBay or Amazon.

How handy/DIY are you?
For my wife's Fusion I was able to buy (e-bay) just the module that goes in the visor. Then I disassembled the visor and wired it in. Took a couple of hours and cost was $20ish. Works great and looks perfect. Instruction videos can be found on YouTube

my GT has that option... i still have a separate remote for it... never used/paired the visor one lol

and the F150 the same, the only difference is the mustang remote is on the center console and the f150 is hanging on the visor...

i prefer simple solutions...

Thanks for the replies. I wasn't even thinking about it when i posted this, since my truck will now be sitting outside the garage I should not need the remote from it for the garage door. I still may eventually buy the visor but for now I will go with what I already have.

Our cars that sit in driveway still have a remote as our family made it a habit to enter the house from the garage!

Before you go to a lot of fiddling around to put in a visor, My 17 Expy and 20 Mustang visors won't run 2 out of 3 of my Liftmaster openers!

How old are your openers? Have you checked with Liftmaster to see if they are compatible with Homelink? Remember this is not Ford's tech. Homelink is used by virtually all automakers.

If you get one - get the 2018+ visor. Not sure what’s different, but my prior 2016 had the same controller in the visor and it absolutely sucked. The 2018 works better and instantly and I can open the door from down the street... LOL

It works with the oldest but the 3 year old ones are a no go. works fine with supplied remotes just neither visor? Jim

I swapped in a Homelink visor from a premium into my 2019 base GT. The connector is identical and it’s a 4 minute swap. Super simple and fits and works perfectly.
