I've had bad luck getting anything to program over the last 5 or 6 years, to the point I stopped trying and just used the remote. The wife wanted her new bronco sport programmed and I tried and failed again. I then looked on YouTube and found a video that says to turn the car on first then just follow the manual. I tried it that way and it worked. I then programmed the other two vehicles and had all 3 done in about 10 minutes.

I tried more than several times without success. In some cases it would would work for a few days and then go intermittent. I was carrying the original door remote in the car anyway, in case Homelink didn’t work, so gave up and went back to using it, which, of course , works every time, and from the street. I’ll try holding the button longer, but I won’t hold my breath.

When you say “turn the car on”, do you mean full accessory or run the engine, not that it should matter.

Full accessory. I don't remember ever seeing that info in any owners manual, but it should be there. programming goes so much easier and faster if you turn the car on first.

Instruction #1.
  1. With your vehicle parked outside of the garage, switch your ignition to the onposition, but do not start your vehicle.

I had a similar issue with my garage opener and a car from Canada. Our opener just wouldn't sync with the in-car buttons no matter what method we tried. After a lot of frustration, we found out that some Canadian models might use a different frequency.

We ended up contacting https://portlanddoorsandlocksguy.com/garage-door-service-portland/new-garage-doors/ for help. They were really knowledgeable and suggested a few tweaks. One thing that helped was making sure the car's system was fully reset before trying again. Their advice really made a difference. You might want to give that a shot or reach out to them for more tips.
