2019 R. First oil change was done by me at 500 miles this past march.

Car currently Has 1900 miles on it, no signs of oil consumption. Car runs strong !!!!
I did an oil change last week before I put it away for the winter.

I decided to cut open the filter to look inside. I found some small, glitter-like particles inside the filter.

I did my best to capture them in the picture but it was difficult to do so.

There were no chunks, it was more like dust particles/glitter.

The biggest pieces were like the one on my thumb, nothing bigger than that.

I know the engine’s internals are still wearing in at 1900 miles.

But, when it comes to engine internals wearing in I am used to seeing the brown “sludge” you get on magnetic oil drains. Not this shimmery stuff.

what do you guys think?

Looks like aluminum from the normal bedding in process. If it was gold or copper and a lot of it, then you’d be in trouble. Here is an example of what trouble looks like after a cam bushing failure on my Harley Sportster engine. Discovered this at just 246 miles during an early oil change on my brand new engine.

there was no copper, it was only that aluminum looking stuff.

im pretty sure it’s the rings bedding into the cylinders (and all the other metal surfaces). I just wanted to ask here and be 100% sure.

man, sorry to hear about your sportster. How did that end up? They warranty the motor?

I have a 2008 Harley Rocker C, about 15,000 miles on it. I change the oil every fall before storage, never looked inside the oil filter. I plan on doing it this week to see what’s going on in there.

As for the oil filter, if it’s still standing upright, turn it upside down in a clean container and let it drain and sit for about 15 minutes. I doubt that you’re going to see anything that’s troubling, but it doesn’t hurt to check it.

No warranty on my 883 Sportster motor. I sent the bottom end out to Darkhorse Crankworks and had them lighten, pro edge and drill window the crank, as well as install Carillo H-beam connecting rods. I also had them do a cam bushing to bearing conversion to the cases. Once that was done, I reassembled the motor myself and installed a 1275 big bore kit with .560 lift cams and a 2 into 1 exhaust system. Now it‘s right and runs great with gobs of power and torque! Here’s a short idling clip.

I did the oil change last week and didnt get around to cutting the filter till tonight so the filter was mostly dry.
when I did the change last week I closely looked at the oil as I was pouring it out of the oil filter housing. It looked clean. I’m mot worried about the metal flakes in my filter, I did some more reading online and it Seems to be a common occurrence in new motors.
ill keep opening the oil filters from now on to make sure it is not getting worse.

man, that sportster sounds great !!! Me ex wife had a 1200, that thing was a rocket. only downfall was it only had 5 gears. I loved that bike, such a contrast to mine.

here’s a pick of mine

I work at an OEM...manufacturing automatic transmissions. Those look like burrs that probably didn't get knocked off when the block or heads with through the HPD (high pressure deburr). Unfortunately its not not always perfect process. Keeping dirt, debris, and chips off of and out of parts can be challenging when you are machining. But what you have there look pretty superficial overall. Chips can be more of a problem in valve body machining because it only takes a small one like you have there to lock of a VB.

It looks normal to me. I took a Ziplock bag to the dealer for my first oil change and asked for the O-rings and the filter cartridge. I gave the filter a close look and as expected a small amount of metal/bearing and a few tiny flecks of sealant or some other rubber type material could be seen under a magnifying glass. The oil was otherwise fine. I have over 4K miles on the car now with zero issues and zero oil use.

It's a 2019,btw.

thank you for the reassurance. I can’t believe it took me 4 years to crack open my oil filters after oil changes. Should have been doing it back in 2016 when I got my Hellcat

Very nice scoot there Alain! Tastefully done!
Thank you sir. I did all the work myself. I’ve taken that thing apart more times than I care to remember.
I barely ride it these days, I spend all my time messing with the cars.

but I can’t get myself to sale it.

Interesting color--camo?--for the filter media. Don't lose any sleep over it, just keep opening filters and, as someone suggested, have oil analyses done if you're still worried about it.

FWIW, we always cut open filters and did an analysis at oil changes on our aircraft engines; a teaspoon or less of metallic crud was acceptable.

Normal machining chips from a new engine. When I changed my HPP ecoboost I saw the same thing. Image below shows the chips on the bottom of the oil pan. During the machining process chips go everywhere and only come out of the nooks and crannies during the engine break in. On a side note my oil was green due to

factory dye used for leak check.
