I learned to drive on a 1966 S Package Baracuda. 273 Cu" V8/276 Crank HP. 3 speed auto and would chirp tires normal throttle each shift. Several cars later and my beast was a 72 Charger with 1969 340. It produced just over 400HP. Very fast car and won a lot of street light weekend races with-it. It was a bear to drive and you had to stay focused all the time. Todays cars almost drive themselves in comparison

I hear ya.. My first car was a 67 Firebird, it was marked "326" on the hood. It ran like a scalded dog, smoking big block Camaro's, Chevelle's, Mopar and even a 70 GTO Judge. We'll I finally blew it up and come to find out it had a 70 Ram Air III Judge motor in it. That was one fun car !

I had some Formula S experience.

Edit: Come to think of it, some might like to see this practice slalom (autocross) in the parking lot at the Tijuana Bullring-By-the-Sea. Exterior of the Barracuda emerges at about 2:40 into the 8mm movie transferred to MPsomething video.

Fools lots of people. The blocks are all the same. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a Big Block Pontiac, so your "326" was easily disguised....LOL.. Too bad you didn't see the cylinder head cast #.

Weren’t the 421/455/428 engines different than the others?

The 421-428-455 engines were large-journal vs the small-journal design for the others. By itself, that wouldn't cause external engine dimensions to increase. I don't think rod length increased.

You're exactly right. Outward appearance was Identical . The dealer said it was a 326 ( but it was a used car), it just had chrome factory valve covers and an 850 cfm Holley spread bore on it. With factory exhaust manifolds..
I was 16 and clueless.
When I finally cracked a piston 3 years later and tore it down I ran the heads and piston down to the Pontiac dealer for parts. It was quite a surprise when we looked up part #'s.
Then it all made sense. This thing was beating 455 T/A's ,440 RT'S, 69 DZ 302's, 340 Darts.
Me and my buddies just kept scratching our heads, thinking I was just getting lucky.
The only car's that that beat this thing consistently was a friend's 55 Chev with a blown big block (tubbed) and a guy in town with a bone stock Hemi Satellite. I lost a few $20. bills to him. Lol
Its was an amazing first car for a 16 year old back in 1978.

Just stroke made the diff in CU In. ...All the same blocks with the exception of the 301 V8. The 301 was it's own, slow, but very reliable and well built and reliability wise every bit a Pontiac engine.

326 with an 850 Holley? LOL... I have the RA3 cam and #16 heads done by Butler Performance on my 79 Firebird... Quick...even today.

I am 52 years young and just bought my first Mustang....2018 GT Premium. My son has a 2013 GT and I have wanted one ever since. Am already dealing with a transmission issue but I love the car.

Given I have precisely the same model (magnetic/black out package) I compliment you on your choice.

Not sure if I am a senior at 59 y.o.a , but I'll post anyways. This is my first mustang I have owned since 2008. All my previous mustangs were fox bodies. One that I had I had alum heads, cam, intake and bigger mass air and throttle body just to make under 300 rwhp. Took a lil break where I got mileage conscious , but now that I am retired I starting looking and ended up with my 2017 shadow black gt with auto trans and it feels so much more refined that I shouldn't even compare it to my previous mustangs.

As a senior citizen I'm curious-how many other old guys are buying Mustang GTs? When I traded in my E350 (for my 19 GT) the look on the salesman's face was priceless.
I'm wondering how much of an anomaly I might be and if not, how many other "older enthusiasts" are enjoying their GTs?
I get questions constantly at the car wash (typically from Audi and Beemer owners) "Sir is that your car? How do you like it?" Translation - why the hell is an oldtimer like you driving that?
It's simple - you're never too old to enjoy a well balanced platform that brings a smile to your face each time you press that button. The active exhaust simply enhances the experience.

Age 78 and still cruising with a standard tranny. Just bought a new Bullitt this past spring. Started in the early ‘60s with a ‘55 Ford V8 convertible, three on the tree, overdrive and dual glass packs. Once it’s in your blood it stays... Bruce

I'm 76 YOA , and I went auto this time. Just accepted delivery of my 2020 GT yesterday. I'll post pictures when I get around to it. Been busy installing the Oil Separator, Jacking Rails, Hood Struts, Clear Coating Calipers, and adding some personal touches. Took her out and put a hundred miles on the clock. That 10 speed is the "Real Deal" and the car is a rocket. Vehicle listed out at $48,320.00 for a Premium GT with all the bells and whistles. That my friends is a lot of cash for a Mustang. What is the rumored 2021 Mach 1 going to cost??

Answer: Because I've been driving one of these things since before you were born. And I put this blower on it just to deal with you young punks. Funny how I find myself saying things like that after turning 60.......
