Called ford today and explained the casting numbers. They asked me to send them pics as they didn’t believe me. The email response I got was.
1. Where did I get the engine?
2. The numbers are Engineering Prototype Casting numbers
Hmmm. Asking for more info from ford.

Yes, an engine that was supposed to be destroyed.
I'm sure they'd love to have it back, but probably not so much as to give you a brand new long block.
I would rebuild that thing and keep it as a spare. I would not race or track it. It has historical significance.

I would trade it for a new engine. But I don’t think ford wants to pony up one of those.
I pulled the heads to check everything and it looks good. Pulled the pan as well and everything is clean.
Going to put new head gaskets and bolts in it.
The plan right now is to swap it into a 65 fastback.

I hope you are going to add lots of bracing to that 65 Fastback......the Voodoo will shake it apart. Plus you will have the cut the hood to fit and all other things.....but I'd like to see it when its done. Wiring harness, ECU, gauges......probably have to cut the shock towers are get all new suspension underpinnings.

Sheet metal has been prepped for this swap. Mini tub, 68 big block towers, larger core support opening.
In process of bracing frame and then a small roll bar to help strengthen it. Trying to find a way for motor mounts to absorb some of the engine vibrations.
I have the engine, radiator, transmission, ECU and wiring. Would love to be able to retrofit the 15-18 interior but the dash is too wide for the 65.
Engine should clear the Shelby hood.

I find it interesting that the hand engraving of “6457.5” on the side of the head matches that of the same on the pedestals within the head.

Drivetrain parts after testing or even those from warranty work are often normally discarded and placed onto pallets; those pallets are usually auctioned, sold or already spoken for by recyclers or resellers who either recycle the metal OR will refurb the parts and in turn resell for profit.
There used to be a place here in NJ where Ford parts came to gather in such a manner. When the SVT Cobra IRS first debuted years ago, there were a bunch of Cobra rear diffs that were sold in a lot. A friend of mine was able to buy some from that lot and then resell again to make himself some coin.
I wouldn’t doubt that is how that engine made it out into the wild.
Do you see any VIN etched or stamped onto the block in the vicinity of the back of the engine, topside or at rear where bell housing would be, or under it if removing oil pan? It won’t be the whole VIN; IIRC for Ford it’s usually the last 8 characters.

'65 with a Voodoo would be insane. Both need to roll again with new meaning.

RFXE is experimental engineering. Ford EDO group ( engine development operations) I had a 00 cobra R engine with every part tattooed. Ford is not thrilled when stuff like that gets out. I was attending the PRI trade show in 2011 or 2012 when I first heard about ( a 5 liter 180 degree crank engine ) It was said it was making over 500 hp but there were difficulties keeping things attached to the block. Your XE engine could be 7-8 years old
Heres a pic of that 00R engine in a '96 cobra. Prototype intake manifold. The production part has a smooth top (because this design tended to collect dirt) and the snout was longer

It appears the ford engine engineer s not happy that this engine is in the wild. They won’t tell me any more about it.
Oh well. It will be fun in the 65.

DSE mini tubs to hold a 315 tire
I plan to run the 5.2 with gt350 trans I picked up. Also going to run the gt350 radiator and fan and also the oil and trans cooler from agt350. The should look good in the opening of the Shelby front valance,
