Has anyone with Sync3 Nav successfully updated their maps?

Which sucks because I think 18-19 cars get the update free.
I will admit, I'm on 3.4 with the 118 maps ... but yes, it would suck if I could not even though I have the right APIM.

I know my APIM came out of a 2019 Mustang, but I really doubt I would be able to get the Maps for it, cuz the VINs don't match. 8)
It will work fine if you put the donor VIN and the APIM ESN in the form. The license file that is generated for the map install contains the APIM ESN, there is no check for original VIN in the upgrade process. The APIM reads the VIN from whatever vehicle it is installed in, but the ESN is hardcoded, that is why the license file uses the ESN.

Well, the issue is that the APIM I got was supposed to have come out of an F150, the shell is the F150, the main board is the Mustang... so the VIN I got was for an F150... 8)
Why they did that I will never know... but I got a good deal on it, and it's at 3.4 and 118, so I can't complain. 8)

So you are saying you use any VIN and the ESN on your APIM and it will work?

I think he means that the donor VIN (vehicle you got it from) and the ESN from your vehicle (it would only show your anyway)

Correct. The ESN is hardcoded to the APIM, so the ESN is the same no matter what car you put an APIM in. The APIM reads the VIN of whatever vehicle it's plugged into (not hardcoded). The Map update site checks that the VIN and ESN are paired as it left the factory, which means the VIN that Ford has to match the ESN is from the donor vehicle. This is one reason I recommend that people who buy APIM upgrades from forum vendors or eBay, etc. request the donor VIN as part of the purchase, otherwise you are pretty much stuck when it comes to something like the Map update site.

I just got through reading through this thread. Thanks for posting a lot of good information. I have an '18 Mustang. I did the nav download last night, and I'll do the install this weekend. Too bad there's no way around running the car for an hour while installing the update. Oh well.......

Yeah, it sucks. Be sure to disable the engine auto-shutoff (which for me automatically re-enabled upon the next ignition cycle).

I used the time to wash and dry the car. The first phase finished about the time I finished with the wash and the second phase finished a little before I finished drying it. (Don't forget that the tailpipes might be warm.)

So dumb question..... Can't the battery survive the radio on for an hour to do the update without the engine running? If I put the car in the on position and have HVAC, etc off, will the radio doing the update alone, kill the battery before the approximate 1 hour is over? Will the car try and save battery after awhile and auto-shutoff the radio? Can I put a battery tender on the battery while the map update is happening?

I have downloaded this latest map, loaded it on the USB, etc. Ready for install. Today I am working from home and would like to do this while I work but not have the car idle for hour in the garage. Ideally, I want to bug out of work stuff early and go for a drive, but I need to wait from my east coast counterparts to be done for the day first..

I did just that yesterday, about a half of an hour in a message popped up and said to turn off car or start it to preserve the battery.

I did the install today. Everything went as advertised. Instead of just sitting in the garage, I took a leisurely drive through some of the back roads in the area. Shut the radio and AC off (nice fall day) and just listened to the exhaust. Before I knew it, the install was complete.

I have tried using my battery maintainer (3 amp, microprocessor controlled) to keep the voltage up while I was programming with FORscan (which is a much shorter process) and it still couldn't keep up. I had to use a larger, dumber charger set to 20 amps (its 2 amp setting didn't work either) to keep the voltage high enough for FORscan (can't have the engine running for that).

If someone wants to try it with the ignition on (not retained accesory power) and an external charger that keeps the voltage high enough (assuming that your charger just wasn't putting out enough voltage) we can see if it will work... I thought about it, but didn't want to risk it crapping out before it was finished. Between this and the threads for updating Sync it seems that these things can be pretty finicky.

There are some nice canyon loops around here that could occupy an hour's worth of leisurely driving... I was afraid that I'd shut it down at a gas station or ice cream shop without thinking. Almost did that out of habit during my first sync undate that lasted longer than my drive to work. I had to sit and idle in the parking lot for another 15 minutes before it finished.
