I save $475/year by running 87 octane over premium. That's with 18k-20k mile/year driven.

In the end, what's it worth to you.

By running 93 octane, you'll be gaining 4-10hp but losing $$$ out of your wallet. I can't for the life of me figure out why some would pay the $300-$500 per year for such a minuscule HP increase (you cannot feel it on the street), but to each their own.
I do it because at my age and stage in life the 500 bucks a year is irrelevant. And also so when I sell it I can put in my ad "only ever used 93 octane in it", like every Mustang owner puts in their ad when they sell it. Even when they're full of shti.:p

Here in Australia we have 91, 95 and 98. I only use 98. Prices can range from $1.20-$1.60 per litre....OR in your language - $3.65-$4.85 per gallon... not to mention it costs us $64,000AUD for a GT !

Well since you work at a refinery. Please explain to me what a Shell refinery does differently than any other refinery on the planet? WhT makes their 93 octane gasoline different? Are they using a secret alkylate that only they can extract? For their high octane gasoline. Some special heptene or toluene that only shell can extract from crude oil? 93 octane gasoline from a shell owned refinery is exactly the same as any other refinery. They are all held to the same standard. They are all tested in a knock lab the exact same way before they are shipped to Customers. Of course a Shell owned refinery makes gas for shell stations in their area. They also make it for every other gas provider in their operating region. Refinery distribution is a regional thing not a company exclusive thing.
Shell says that there 93 reduces carbon buildup on valves. After reading two separate test reports by independent agencies, they confirmed the claim. And not all 93 that they tested prevented the carbon buildup. Shell says that there 93 is nitrogen enriched. I will ask my co workers in the knock test lab what they see. I don't work in the alky unit, so I don't know. Cat cracker, sats gas, and so on.

You can't compare the octane ratings between the US and Oz. In Oz (and NZ where I'm from) the octane rating is the RON number. Here in the US the octane rating is the RON+MON divided by 2. That's why the octane ratings in the US appear to be lower than NZ/Oz but in reality they're not.

Mel Gibson is an American.
You're joking, right?

I experimented with 87 and 93. On my once a month 320 mile round trip. With 93 i ran 24.5mpg at 80 mph. With 87 i ran 29.2 mpg. Using shell.

Not sure why that is. Im no engineer.

How did you get that result? Did you divide the miles driven by fuel in the car or are you going by what the car is telling you. Not trying to be an ass but the EPA results for the engine is 25mpg highway so I'm pretty skeptical of a claim of almost 30.

Hi guys,

I guess I will just go to Shell and get the 93 Premium. I live in the Chicago area and we only get the E10 crap here, so maybe it is better to run Vpower fuel instead of 87 with 10% Ethanol.

If anybody knows a location where I can get Ethanol free gas in this area, I would appriciate to know.

Thanks a lot guys.

Yes I divided miles by fuel added. That trip meter is inaccurate. To be honest as I'm at 14k miles I've been getting better gas mileage. Usually I'll have half a tank left one way from full. But that last result I had a little less than half used. So my visual and math worked out. 3.31 car BTW.

Run 87 and then 93 and report back the difference in MPG and Performance. I think you will find that both will have the same fuel economy and seat of the pants performance. Neither one will offer any level of safety over the other. The coyote will live just as happily on 87 as it would on 93 octane.

As for E-Free, why do you want to run it? You are going to only notice a 3% savings in fuel economy, but it is typically going to cost you > 10% more for the ethanol free fuel. The only motors you need to run ethanol free in is lawnmowers lawn equipment that is not ethanol safe.

Again, don't take anyone's word for it, test it out for yourself.

93 octane, 24.5mpg at 80 mph
87 octane, 29.2mpg at ?? mph

The only cars I've seen get vastly over EPA mpg were old diesels. My old modified TDI with 200hp and 300+ tq could get 50 mpg combined and the EPA rated it for 45 mpg highway.

From what I've read 93 will get you another 10hp over 87, so hardly noticeable in times and unlikely to be noticed seat of the pants.

I've been filling up at Sunoco (top tier since last month I believe) and Shell. I've tried 93 but noticed no real difference except for 1-2 miles per gallon better when compared to 87.

However, from reading earlier posts, is it true that Shell 93 has significant detergent/quality differences compared to Shell 87?

I've specifically avoided the no-name gas (Sheetz, Wawa, 7-Eleven, etc.) because I figured it was garbage gas without detergent. I've always used those in my beaters but never cared what effect they had on the engine either. I've also read that some places actually use top tier but just don't advertise it.
