Hi guys,

I guess this came already couple of times and I wonder what was the outcome.

I'm originally from Germany and there was no question that you have to use Aral Ultimate 102 (BP Ultimate), if you have a performance car, because it is the best gas available.

Since I'm living in the USA, I ask myself which gas I should use here. Sadly in the Chicago Area all the gas contains Ethanol, even the Premium.

I can't decide if I should use BP Premium or Shell VPower, any suggestions? Couldn't find any reviews yet...

There is not really any benefit from one gas brand to another. They're all made to the same industry spec.

The other gotcha is that higher octane doesn't generate any more power than lower octane gas. In fact it burns slower! What higher octane does is allow you to run higher timing numbers, which may give a tad bit more power, if the car is tuned for it.

Some cars are designed to require 93 and its not safe to run them with less than 93, but our cars are not designed that way.

For our cars (well, GTs at least, IDK what Ecoboosts require), GTs only require 87 octane. The engine computer will compensate and adjust timing to match the gas. If you're running a higher octane and the computer doesn't detect any knock, the computer can add back some timing, but the reality is running 87 will really only loose you as little as like 4hp over premium gas, and only if the computer actually wanted to run more timing. The difference in performance from octane rating in our cars is less than the difference in power due to ambient weather conditions, altitude, etc. Need more evidence for this? Note that your fuel economy MPG doesn't change when you run higher octane gas. If the car was more efficient with more expensive gas, it should.

I like to just run 87 when I'm not racing that week. I can't tell any seat of the pants difference in power from running 87 versus 93.

So to make a long story short, 87 is perfectly fine and you'll still have more power on demand than 98% of the cars on the road, and you probably won't be able to tell the difference from the seat of your pants. If you absolutely won't be able to sleep at night unless you know your car is making the most power it possibly can for each and every full-throttle run, then sure, pay for 93.

I run 93 and usually fill up at QT or Shell. I haven't noticed any difference and QT is usually cheaper.

I only run premium it's a sports car and I want it to run at its full potential all the time even if I'm not racing it. The diferrence in price isn't much 5-7 dollars maybe depending on the prices around you. Around me it's 2.39 for 87 and 2.89 for 93 so 50 cents difference and my tank usually takes about 14 gallons so it cost me 7 dollars more over 87.

I work at a major east cost refinery. The gasoline itself is exactly the same between distributors. And we supply all major brands with gasoline. (Shell, BP, Valero, etc.) All gas stations in a region will receive gasoline from the local refineries in the area reguardless of brand. It's not like shell owns a refinery and they only make gas for shell stations. The only difference between the big players and the mom and pop gas stations is the additives the major brands are willing to use in their gasoline.

I personally like Exxon, Chevron, BP or Shell - in that order. I find I get better gas milage with Exxon. - For my Ford Flex.
For my performance car I run Sunoco Ultra®93

Yeah used to love fill'n up there back in the day when all the street racers hung out at Westchester Mall across from the utotem store. ;)

Use any top tier gas (not the same as octane) from a high volume gas station and sleep well at night.

Just run the best you can afford. For me I prefer ethanol-free premium from BP.

I don't even have the option of 93 in Kansas, so I alternate between 87 and 91.

I work at a Shell refinery. Yes the 87 octane gas is blended to the same standard. The 93 octane is not. So Shell does make gas for shell stations. Just not the low octane.

My father works at a Philips 66 refinery and they distribute gas to all gas stations in all octanes. Only the additives are different like what was said before.
