Oil Change DIY + Catch Can Draining

Made this video today of my oil change... Need input on the amount of oil that came out of my catch can after roughly 2000 miles of spirited street / highway. Does it seem like an average amount? And after these 2000 miles in between oil changes, I consumed about 3/4 quart of oil as well.

After my last oil change, even torquing to spec, the oil filter started to come loose. Do you guys think this t-bolt clamp on the oil filter against the oil filter housing will prevent the oil filter from vibrating loose? Tomorrow I need to mark the clamp and oil filter to make sure it doesn't spin loose inside the clamp.

Did my first oil change this weekend also. I used a zip lock bag around the filter while removing it and it helped minimize the mess a good bit. I still had a little residual drain on the wiring harness, but that was about all I had to clean up. 18lbs/ft on the money, but my OCD will have me under there with a torque wrench back on it after a few drives.

It was ABN brand oil filter wrench I bought off Amazon but it seems like it is no longer offered. Any 74.2mm 14 flute wrench should do the job.

Forgot what thread or who posted it but someone on this forum gave some helpful hints when doing your own oil change. One that helped minimize the mess when screwing the filter off was to pierce a small hole in the bottom corner of the filter before loosening it. This allowed most of the oil in the filter to drain out before unscrewing it. You still need a rag around the filter when unscrewing it but it definitely reduces the mess. Did you notice any vibration from the clamp making contact with the filter housing?

Plastic Drain Plug?

I use a brass drain plug. I would never trust a plastic fitting in a heat area. Especially when the failure of the cheap plug would result in a catastrophic failure of the engine.

So are you proposing tapping a hole in our plastic oil pans to use a brass plug?

On my first oil change I tried this method of poking the hole in the filter, but essentially oil still dripped out and the oil coming out of the hole kept the filter messy with oil dripping onto my ratchet, I opted to skip that step this go around, and fortified the area with plenty of rags.

It's not convenient and I don't want to pay more for less attention to detail and care.

I feel a lot more comfortable doing my own work (on the things I'm capable of doing) versus letting the Ford Tech's have a stab at it. I double and triple check everything I do, whereas they might rush the job to get to the next car and forget something crucial. Plus, I get to spend some quality time with her. :cheers:

I'd also recommend checking out your front splitter if you have not done so while you are doing the oil change (since the car will be jacked up). The middle section of my splitter was not seated in the tabs all the way so I took the front 4 screws holding it in place out and gave it a nice rubber mallet hammer tap to fit it up nicely, then installed the 4 screws back into the splitter starting with the middle two and working my way out to the outer two. Now the splitter is 100% flush and locked into all the tabs.

Sorry, but this is a silly question. I would bet that the chances are pretty high that the Ford Tech has never seen a GT350 before in real life. And the chances are also high that your car will get damaged in some way by someone who doesn't care about your car as much as you do.

There is a certain amount of pride a "car guy" gets from doing things on their own, and if you do a little research on how to do things, you will do a better job than a high school grad mechanic.

By this assumption, the entire oil pan including all the baffling inside it would melt according to you.
