OPG Install - New Gaskets?

All after putzing around for a couple of weeks, I have decided to tackle the OPGs myself.

Ford Manual mentions changing the cover and front gaskets, but nobody mentions having done that in their install threads. Trying to decide if I should order them before starting the job

How much do the gaskets cost vs. how long would it take to do it right the second time?

It can be done right the first time reusing the gaskets. The stock gaskets are rubber and if the vehicle is new the gaskets won't be hard or brittle. Most shops that do the gear install reuse the stock gaskets as well.

I'll chime in from my install last week. Yes all the gaskets are nice and rubbery still. Just be careful when pulling the valve covers and timing cover off. Look for where the gaskets are bonded to the heads or down at the oil pan joint. Just pull slow and take your time and the gaskets will pull free from the rtv. I cleaned the timing cover and valve cover ones in warm soapy water in my kitchen sink. I would say they looked as good as new when I re-installed them using Ultra black at the joints the FSM points out. Only been two days of driving and no leaks, so knock on wood there. Hopefully some others will chime in to tell you they re-used them or not. Funny can totally be in your shoes from a week ago. I was pursuing new gaskets but ended up not buying them and it all worked out fine.

Used mine over as well. If I opened it up again, I'd still do it the same way.

No need for new gaskets, unless you mess one up.

Also, note that the 2015+ gaskets are not the same gasket as before. Plenty of vendors are selling them as fitting the 2015+, but be very clear on what you are looking for.

We need the higher priced gaskets.

I reused mine twice (got the timing off the first time) and don't have any leaks.

I used new gaskets. Just me. The old ones do look good and I have saved them. The valve cover gaskets are pricey so I can see why some may not get new ones.

I'm just finishing up my procharger install and I also did the oil pump gears, crank sprocket and secondary timing chain mod. Granted my car is new, but even a couple years old, I couldn't see why you would need new gaskets. They are thick rubber that seat into the valve covers and timing cover. Like others said, when your removing the parts, just pull slow, especially on the timing cover because, the gasket will be stuck in the rtv at the seams where the head/block connect and oil pan, etc. I purchased the ford recommended RTV, but after doing it, standard RTV from the auto parts store would be fine, imho. You are simply putting a little dab at a couple gaps to help the rubber gasket seal over those areas.

I'm doing my OPG/TS install myself within the next few weeks and went ahead and ordered a bunch of new gaskets and seals that the SVTPerformance install page calls out (the one with all the pictures that was done on a 2014 Mustang). I ordered mine from Autonation Ford White Bear Lake and doubled checked that the gaskets I got would all fit the 2015. I plan on reusing the gaskets already on the car (car has 23,000 miles), but bought these just in case something goes wrong or I accidentally damage one. As for the gasket sealant, I'm just going to use the Permatex Ultra Black. I'll report back if I used any new gaskets or not.

it's really not a hard job at all. The newer cars are much easier than the older 4.6 modular cars when it comes to removing the TC. Much less in the way, less accessories, and all that.

I think most people get intimidated by the timing procedure or even thinking of messing with it. The truth is the timing is the easy part, that dam inner oil pickup bolt can be a stubborn bitch:frusty:

Yeah with the proper procedure the timing is easy peasy. That damn inner pickup tube bolt though is a pain.
