Just an FYI, I was curious about the difference in surface area between the drop in Green Filter and the OEM paper filter. Note each pleat has 2 sides.

OEM Paper Filter:
82 Pleats
51mm height per pleat
147mm wide per pleat

Total Surface Area: 82 x 51 x 147 x 2 = 1,229,508 mm^2

Green Filter:
33 Pleats
20mm height per pleat
125mm wide per pleat (note this is the width of the exposed area as there's flashing that covers some of the filter media)

Total Surface Area: 33 x 20 x 125 x 2 = 165,000 mm^2

1,229,508 / 165,000 = 7.45 times

So there you have it, the OEM filter has 7.5 times the surface area of the Green Filter. Unless the oiled cotton media flows 7.5x better per a square centimeter than the fibrous paper media (which I can't see how it possibly could and maintain 99% of the filtration efficiency claimed), then the OE filter will theoretically outflow the panel filter. This is mostly due to the difference in surface area, not the quality of the filter or the media. Surely the oiled cotton has markedly higher flow, but I really struggle with it being 7.5 times better per the same given area...

For those with closed box CAI's, an oiled cotton conical filter compared to an OE filter will be a different story because the surface area on a conical filter is quite a bit more in comparison to the panel filter due to physical size and shape, the story may be more favorable there.

Also want to note there are some consequences of the green filter, this may apply more to being used with the BIG MOUTH ram air duct and not as much on factory intake tracts. Because it's oiled, it tends to trap much larger media, such as sand sized particles, at least when using the BIG MOUTH ram air duct. After 4k miles there was literally a pile of sand / fine gravel debris that were left on the bench after tapping the filter on it. The paper filter likely would not hold onto those large of particles, they would fall off as soon as you let off the throttle (aka flow drops) and end up at the bottom of the intake box (I will find out how true that is over the next 4k miles), but I've never seen had that happen with paper filters to date.

What's interesting is that most of the drop in filter manufacturers make claims showing marked increase in flow rates, but I'm skeptical of that given the discrepancy of surface area unless of course they are sacrificing filtration ability (again they claim increased flow and nearly same filtration capability). Maybe what they are sacrificing is filter capacity, aka it will become clogged sooner...not sure, but the math isn't adding up.

I measured the filters using a digital calipers, I was careful to compress the gasket to get an accurate measurement of the pleats on each one, the measurements are well within +/-1mm accuracy and it's a calibrated instrument.

Maybe I'm beating a dead and somewhat irrelevant horse given the price points of these filters. There's the argument it's cheaper in the long run...but at what cost of contamination?

Bob the oil guy was not terribly impressed by them in his testing and basically found the pressure drop differences to be negligible but with slightly poorer filtration, and this was on filters that from his photos, did not have near the discrepancy in surface area (Mazda Miata filters, which I'm familiar with having owned a 97 M-edition at one point) due to the depth of the pleats.

For now I'll stick the OE filter back in and see how the car feels and responds over the next 4k miles after having driven with the green filter for about 4k miles. It will be interesting to see also if it holds onto the larger debris like the "green filter" did, which block a very substantial amount of low over a short period of time.

My experience is you get much less actual filter area with pleated paper because the pleats collapse on each other cutting off the flow in that area. The flat panel filters seem to be worse for this phenomenon.

What sold me on oiled gauze filters was back in my dirt bike Enduro racing days in the late 60s to late 70s.

On a 100 mile Enduro on a dry dusty route I could not finish the race without stopping and knocking the dirt off the filter because it would plug up to the point the engine would barely run. After I switched to K&N filters I never had that issue again. And before you say it was because the filter was passing the dirt into the engine, the down stream intake track on my bikes would always be coated with dirt after a race with the paper filters and would clean when using the oiled gauze.

Another advantage of the oiled gauze filters was if you got the filter wet which was not an uncommon thing during an Enduro the paper filter would not flow air at all while wet so you had to remove it to continue the race while the oiled gauze continued to be effective.

I have to admit that I have never been able to notice a power increase between the two types when they are both new. My motivation with the drop in filters is I tend to keep vehicles 7 to 10 years or more and put 200k+ miles on them so over the life of the vehicle I save money with the K&N. As a matter of fact after driving my 4x4 pickup on the beach (it was rusting away) for the past 17 years (& 200k miles) with the same K&N I picked up a newer truck that uses the same filter and the K&N was moved to the new truck.

Their results correlate with mine. Especially with the RAM air duct, the green filter was holding large particles a paper filter typically would not. While they noted the K&N's do flow better when clean, they reach capacity much sooner than paper or dry media (such as the AEM) filters and quickly are over taken.

The green filter is pretty much the same design as the K&N. Although as you noted you can get the large dirt and dust particals off more easily, which was my experience also, however the filtration is inferior.

I've used K&N's for years also, but it was always because it came with a CAI. The evidence is not very convincing for me to continue using the green filter at this point, if there are any gains, they are so minuscule I would rather have better filtration and more consistent power between cleaning intervals.

A dirty K&N flows much worse than a dirt paper filter / AEM dry flow etc. according to the testing. I think this i why OE's are still using paper filters, it's the best combination of consistency, filtration and convenience, although something like the AEM dry flow technology would be a viable alternative that's re-usable.

Anyone want a drop in green filter (only 4k miles) with full recharger kit (not used yet) for $35 shipped? If you clean it often it will flow better, but I'm not realistically going to clean it constant, maybe once a year and at this rate that's far too long an interval to keep it flowing well.

The filter aftermarket must perform an air flow test with a given range of CFM and the differential pressure across the filter. That would be part of their beginning performance R&D. Has any one ever seen a flow curve report on a filter or CAI?

Then again, I could use the paper filters for daily driving and just swap it out for the green filter on track days. That's really it's benefit. That way I won't have to clean it constantly and I get the benefits of better filtration for daily use :-).

Did you forget about my real world testing at the drag strip? My car trapped higher with the green filter.

Throttle response is noticeably better with the Green filter as well.

Also SVT did testing on a 2012 GT, they found the K&N actually produced slightly less power at low and high ends, but no change in mid.

Then they did it again after they super charged it with repeatable results. Now again, the benefit I think is in full closed boxed CAI's or with more frequent maintenance / low use.

But you can't get around the fact that a dirty oiled cotton filter flows less than a dirty paper filter at the same dust capacity...all these tests on the dyno are always done on clean filters, that's not realistic. Look at how much crap was in mine after just 4k miles....

Nobody ever does testing after 10k miles, then goes to the track or dyno etc...consistency is more important to me than peak performance if I can't maintain it. I want my car to perform as good as it can on average, not great one day and crappy the next.

Now I'm not suggesting the oiled cotton drop in filters don't have a valid place. They do add a little power, not much, according to Adam's testing on average of 3-5 hp on modified cars...but it might be worth 1/2-1mph trap speed.

If your plan on running a single filter and not cleaning it constantly OE Paper Filters or AEM Dryflow filters are the better choice.

If your tracking the car or you clean the filter fairly regularly or drive on fairly clean roads (very low dust) etc. the oiled cotton filters will be a better choice. Saying one is always better than the other is not valid because they each have their application.

I originally chose the Green Filter for it's performance, what I didn't realize at the time was how quickly it would reach capacity. This thing was really clogged and with large sand sized particles. The story may be different if you have a stock grille, but if your running an open grille or BIG MOUTH duct and you drive that car daily, chances are you'll be making more power with a paper filer or AEM type after 5k~10k miles...again, unless you clean the filter more frequently.

It's all about the balance of performance vs. maintenance. Here in Ohio and with my particular car setup the oiled cotton filters are not workin for me as I'm not interested in cleaning it every 5k miles....take the information for what it's worth. Make a choice based on YOUR circumstances, driving conditions.

Some times the fastest car on the track is not the fastest car on the track if you know what I mean. I started this post to share information I found, because I thought it might be beneficial. I have yet to see a single post in which anyone considers the context of use, air flow over time and air flow as the filter starts to collect dust, which is a real metric. Your filter will collect dust / debris and it's flow will decrease. That's why OE's use them, it's not just convenience and "idiot proof". It's RELIABLE, CONSISTENT over longer service intervals.

5k miles isn't a long enough service interval for me. I need at least 10k (at oil change intervals) and the oiled cotton filters flow will be dramatically reduced by that point, especially during winter with all the salt dust. I'm not the only one who lives in a 4-season state, i'm not the only one who has the BIG MOUTH / GT grille mod and drives their car daily, so I think this information could be very beneficial to those with similar setups and conditions who might be experiencing reduced performance much sooner than they thought. You might not be able to tell as it's not an immediate degradation, but it's there. I may give the AEM dry flow a try and see how long that takes to fill up with debris and if sand sized particles tend to cling to it or fall off like with the paper OE filters. It's kind of an in-between, with similar flow to an oiled cotton filter but with the dust capacity and longer term service interval of a OE paper filter.

No I did not. But there are other users on this forum who trapped at the same speed and ran the same times. Yet there are GT owners who ran slightly slower with the K&N's. There's variations from car to car, from track to track, driver to driver and day to day to really rely on your single experience and there's lots of data that contradicts it.

I"m not suggesting your lying or did anything wrong. By all means, if you run faster with the green filter then use it. Again, there are other factors however that over time may change your results (aka like 10k miles of daily driving...). Just keep that in mind. I'm not trying to start a flame war or say these oiled cotton filters don't have application. But I want to bring to light their application is geared more towards performance at the cost of filtration and longevity (service intervals are much shorter). For a daily driver and for the minuscule gains under the most ideal circumstances it does not seem worth it in the long run unless your willing to frequently clean them, at least in environments like mine. Otherwise they will have poorer flow on average over the same 10k or 15k service interval and your "more performance" and "better throttle response" will actually turn into worse.

Because truth is a rare commodity, especially when it comes to absolute truth irrespective of personal biases. Argue all you want in favor of this or that filter, but the facts are in this readily available and many people make choices having only facts from very specific and "ideal" circumstances.

Now put that into real world situations and what they thought was the best choice is not necessary the best choice anymore. Idealized testing is just that, ideal, it's not realistic. I own a Green Filter, I own the OE filter and I'm just reporting on some findings that surprised me that I did not expect. I looked at the ideal testing and never really considered more real world testing, more or less I bought the hype, literally.
