So, I decided to make a shifter change. The stock shifter has better action than the Boss 302 I had, but there was still some notchiness and sponginess. I had been informed of the MGW alternative and was even more intrigued when everyone I talked to about MGW shifters had nothing but excellent reviews to relay.

After locking down a date to go over and get a shifter, I traveled to MGW to meet the owner, George, and the whole drive over I tried to record in my mind all the feels and throws of the stock unit so that after the install, I could compare thoughts.

I have to commend George here, cause it's not every day that the owner of a very busy company sets aside time to meet, talk and personally look at my car and help me with my shifter concerns.

Now to the bread and butter... As you can see from the pic above, there isn't much difference in the outward appearances between the stock shifter and the MGW unit. But, man... If you could just Superman peak under that boot you would see and appreciate the precision, hardcore efforts of a man that thought out and machined a unit that is of astounding quality and finish. You could also see the mechanics which make this shifter a more solid performer. The swap was done quickly and I was amazed at the ease of which it was installed which goes lengths to confirm the quality that George has put into his product.

The reverse action is more deliberate and akin to my 13 Boss 302 by pushing down and pulling left and then pushing forward. The throw is nearly identical in travel length to the stock unit. First to second is mechanical, second to third was as easy as placing the ball in the palm of my right hand and giving a slight push forward and then the shifter finds third like it was its purpose in life to do so. Third to fourth as first to second... Smooth and mechanical. Fourth to fifth required just a little encouragement to the right and slight push forward, but I was most impressed with the 5/6 transistion. Prior, with the stock unit, there was an awkward notch and I needed to have a stronger effort to push right and pull down which was not a natural feeling action, but the MGW shifter alleviated that needed hefty push and traded it for a pull down with only slight rightward encouragement.

I'm told I can put this unit through some very rigorous use with some serious hefty throws during gear changes should I wish and it will perform without problem. I did get a little savage on the way home on the dry pavement after the car had warmed up, but there was wet pavement ahead so I took it easy for the rest of the drive.

My initial impressions?... Damn good American engineered and produced product that is days ahead of the techno in the stock unit. There is no additional noise, yet there is much more positive feel and engagement. If you want a hellagood shifter, this is the shifter for you!

Very nice writeup. I'm convinced. How much is this going to set me back?

Thanks

Thanks for the write up DrumReaper. I understand exactly what you're saying about the 5/6 shift, it's unlike any of the others, mine feels like it's going through very thick molasses...
Regarding the shift to reverse, do you push the entire knob down? Would be nice to remove the collar if so..
Agree with your comments about George and MGW, from my little experience, they've been terrific. Wish he was in New England!!!

The ugly tall reverse collar is removed and our special adapter sits almost flush inside the knob so it looks MUCH cleaner than OEM.

A few notes...

The shift reduction is shorter but only about 10 percent . I have decided to collect a consensus from the first run guys about how it feels and if the majority wants it shorter then we will supply a new upper no charge. I personally think the oem throw is pretty short and going too short will make it very notchy.

I love mine, and George installed mine, too! Thanks!

It butters up after a little while. Two days after I got the shifter, I beat a '16 Camaro SS automatic in an 1/8 mile race (Friday Night Drags). Made it to the finals and was beaten by a fellow club member who has a Cobra Jet and a lot more skill. I'll admit, I got too excited and shifted from 1st to 4th so that was a certain loss regardless of the power difference. Wasn't the MGW's fault. It was my own self-ruin... I had the tree by a bit (I think/thought), felt I was a little ahead of a car I shouldn't be in front of (probably actually wasn't, haha), got excited, and had to screw it up for myself by moving my body in my seat while shifting the shifter. But anyway, the 2nd to 3rd action is just wonderous... just wondefully wonderously wonderful.

Here's George installing mine: https://www.instagram.com/p/BIXg4anAKc6/?taken-by=sirboom_photography

It's a very quick action, you just push down a bit on the ball while pushing left and then up and bazzaam you're in reverse. Mindless, really. Confuses the hell out of people who have an S550 and drive my car, but... not my problem.

Engaging reverse will bring back memories for those owners of 12/13 Boss 302s with the down and left action. It's simple, clean and easy.

I'm tickled pink with mine and can't wait to get her on the track.

The shifter with oem knob adapter is 495.00 ...you can apply the 6g discount code when ordering ( just mention it as we do not have this shifter online yet)

George, DR brought his R model over to my place yesterday after installation in Augusta to see what I thought of the change in shifter feel.

All I can say is "Outstanding!"

The firmness and preciseness of your new MGW shifter for the GT350/GT350R's is evident immediately and of course I was looking for the reverse collar which was no where to be found and frankly did not miss it. Reminded me of the way my Boss 302 cars look and function.

I am heading away for a few weeks but when I get back I will give your office a call and I will look at changing over to an MGW for one of my Laguna Seca's.

For any of you serious gearheads out there I suggest that you take a serious look at making a change to an MGW shifter and suggest that you will be happy that you did!

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Is the shifter in 3rd gear in the pic or does the MGW change where the shifter sits?

Looks great, I'm seriously considering one. Hopefully there will be an install vid somewhere before my car arrives next month.
