I updated the software and my camera still looks a little, "dark" to me...as if it's trying to adjust for direct sunlight. I don't get the pixelating anymore though, so it might just be me. I'm monitoring.

lots of people upgraded Sync when it was published, oh 3-4 months ago? There are 2 problems. Camera and/or wiring harness. Mine was apparently the camera.
I noticed my car did a Sync update on 30 Aug, then again on 30 Sep. Seemed strange that there were two Sync updates so close together. And now the camera went wonky (coincidence? I have no idea...). I have no clue if the Sync SW relates to the camera or not. That’s why I mentioned the SW version.

For those that have disconnected their car from the internet: What Sync build do you have?

my admittedly unscientific observation was if the camera is at fault, lift the tail gate and slam it or hit the area near the camera mount with a fist. If your camera comes back it's probably the camera. Mine came back every time I banged on it. Reminded me of the old saw of kicking the computer to get it to work.

A recall for a faulty circuit board inside the camera has been announced by Ford. Ford says the recall will begin on November 7th. As many as 700,000 Ford vehicles may be affected....with the Mustang being the only Ford car in the recall.

From recent Consumer Reports online article:

Vehicles Recalled (all are from the 2020 model year)
• Ford F-150 trucks built between Oct. 26, 2019, and May 18, 2020
• Ford Explorer SUVs built between Nov. 16, 2019, and May 18, 2020
• Ford Mustang coupes and convertibles built between Nov. 18, 2019, and May 26, 2020
• Ford Expedition SUVs built between Oct. 30, 2019, and June 22, 2020
• Ford Escape SUVs built between Nov. 5, 2019, and May 18, 2020
• Ford Ranger trucks built between Dec. 9, 2019, and May 19, 2020
• Ford Edge SUVs built between Nov. 13, 2019, and May 26, 2020
• Ford Transit vans built between Oct. 28, 2019, and May 20, 2020
• Ford Super Duty trucks built between Oct. 30, 2019, and May 18, 2020
• Lincoln Corsair SUVs built between Nov. 14, 2019, and May 18, 2020
• Lincoln MKX and Nautilus SUVs built between Nov. 21, 2019, and May 26, 2020
The problem: A faulty circuit board that’s part of the backup camera may cause images to be distorted or not show at all while the vehicle is in Reverse. This means the vehicle doesn't meet federal safety standards for rear visibility, which could lead to a crash or injury.
The fix: Ford dealers will replace the entire backup camera free of charge.
How to contact the manufacturer: Ford will contact owners by mail starting on Nov. 7, 2020. Owners may also call Ford at 866-436-7332.
NHTSA campaign number: 20V575. Ford’s own number for this recall is 20C19.
Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has an open recalls that need to be addressed.
If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.

Geeze..first the brake pedal and now the camera. Someone is pinching pennies too hard. I think I'll wait until both are available before handing her off to the tech.

I don't remember where I saw it but Ford changed the supplier of the camera (or the board) to China and that's when they right royal F'd themselves.

Thanks, good info. Recalling 700,000 vehicles is gonna hurt....
I checked my VIN and it doesn’t show as part of any recall (yet). My build start date (25 Nov 19) is very close to the start of the recall window.

Don: I don't know what the current version of Sync 3 is but I checked mine and it's 3.4 which SHOULD be older than yours IF my connection is ACTUALLY disabled.

Still haven't learned whether or not Telematics covers the Network or BT radios. S'pose I should just go check but it's too hot in the garage for that.

I think mine was delivered with 3.3, and the system locked into my WiFi and did an update to 3.4 all by itself. When you get a chance, check your SW build # too. Its right below the Sync #. Mine is build # 20136.

I tapped the camera and closed the trunk, and now my camera works.
I thought about swapping the cameras between my GT350 and GT500. But my thought now is to let the recall fix it. Likely a HW issue.

Thanks for posting the link.

Dealers will replace the rearview camera. Official notification to dealers and customers will begin Nov. 7. The Ford reference number for this recall is 20C19.

My back up camera is not covered by this recall as mine is just a 2016 Mustang. Nevertheless, it still does all those weird things but only intermittently. I sure hope I can get this figured out and get the camera to work reliably during this lifetime.

SD: Funny how technology silently winds its way into our lives, huh? Those who grew up before such things, like myself, find that we hardly use it due to old habits. Sorry yours isn't covered, Ford lucked out in your case, and odds are, you'll have to bite the bullet and buy a cam. Normally, I'd say they can't be too expensive but after hearing about all these ridiculous part prices, who knows?
