And most of those aren’t actually tinted, the glass has a dye layer in it which offers zero thermal protection.
Yeah he mentioned that those are dyes and not tint film but are equivalent to a 20% film. And yeah there’s no thermal protection at all. My wife’s SUV gets way hotter than my car does in the summer time

My last stop was 10 years ago for failure to stop at stop sign, I did stop just not long enough for that particular cop I guess, it was out of town on a trip. It was in the 97 maxima as well and nothing said about dark tint.

What kind of cost has it been to have the side and back window tinted in recent times. It has been over 15 years or more since I have had any windows tinted.

Any of you all that have tinted side or back windows that are below the legal limits of your state laws ever have issues with cops pulling you over for the dark tint. I believe my state is 32 or 34% for front side and back windows and no tint below the ASI line on front windshield.

I had a 97 black maxima that was I believe 20% on all windows except the windshield and got stopped by a trooper on I-20 and told it had to be removed, never did remove it and drove it for 16 years after that without ever getting stopped again.

Just curious how may have been stopped for too dark of tint.

I haven’t been stopped. Our state is 35% for front side windows and 20% rear side windows and rear windshield. There’s a couple rice Civics I see almost every day with reflective tint (not legal here in IL and I suspect illegal in most states) on all windows and they’ve not been pulled over even when a cop has driven right by them. I even have a few buddies that are cops that have 20% tint on their front windshields and have told me they have bigger fish to fry than window tint. That said, they have all said if there’s a bigger reason to pull you over, they will also nail you for the tint. Same for front plates (required here).

Yea I believe mirrored tint is illegal in most all states now, it used to be all you could get years ago before the UV protection and ceramic tints you can get now. I think most cops will only ticket you for tint if they pull you over for another offense these days. Like you say bigger fish to fry.

Thats not to bad, I was expecting it to be more.

BD
Yeah I thought it was a fair price. Had I done a film on the front windshield, it would’ve been another $200.

Window tint violations are a secondary offense so a cop won’t pull you over for just that. But, if you’re limo tinted it may get their attention and get them interested in finding a reason to pull you. All depends on the cop lol.

I just paid $800 for the convertible to get everything done in Xpel Prime XR Plus. Prices have definitely gone up. A few years ago I paid $650 for the same work on my Shelby.

Lots of good input here.

I like the idea of putting the parking decal on a placard or something, to put in the dash. As long as they have a clear view of the permit and can confirm it's correct, you should be fine.

Skye's sides and back are using a ceramic tint. 30% of the outside, visible light arrives inside, the legal state limit. As others have mentioned, near 100% UV blockage. Consider the rear window alone is like a Sky (not Skye :giggle: ) light; it's near flat.

Skye's entire windshield is using a ceramic tint. 70% of the outside, visible light arrives inside, which is illegal. By the law, I can do whatever I want down to the "ASI" marker on the windshield, but go no lower.

They do make windshield ceramic tint 80% (most vehicles from factory).

One benefit of ceramic tint is, while it blocks UV rays, it does not interfere with polarized lenses, cell and radio signals.

Attached are some photos.

The outside photos were taken in full daylight. The garage, at night.

While the windshield is illegal, what anyone sees is subjective. You can Google for the effects, but the same car, same tint, will look different, given one has a white interior and the other black. And the actual viewing angle, as you can see. Anyone checking would need an actual light meter. There's no other way to tell.

Discuss all these issues with the detailer and check some of their work. They should have some displays available on the different types, may even give you a junk piece to try out.

Shops will install whatever you can pay for, so read up on any laws in your state.

Being in Atlanta :sun:🥵, you should notice a big difference. Best Wishes on the install.

OP, get the front tinted/coated, then put clear tape on half the window sticker. Or more, depending on how sticky, then put the sticker on. It makes removal a breeze, and still allows you to be in compliance.

As for legal or not. Only you can research what your local area says with regards to front window tint, and make your own decision. I wouldn't trust anyone on here to tell you the right answer.

I am in Southern California and you can't tint the front or windshield legally, except whatever comes from the factory. Fucking stupid considering how hot it gets here and it is a useless law, imo. I can spray paint the back windows and rear glass black if I want, which I would think is more of a danger to LEO'S than the driver.

To add to everyone else, definitely do ceramic. I did limo on the rear glass and 20% on sides, I didnt touch the windshield yet. For most part, police around here leave you alone, unless you are driving like a jackass or have an excessively loud car.
