I hear all of the recommendations to get new ones, I see all of the cars that have them, I am NOT at a power level that I will need them, BUT

Who here has actually broken one/a pair? What were the conditions, what power level, etc...?

Just interested

I broke one with Jlt intake tune and NT05R radials launched at 3500 this was the 6th pass on stock axles. Now I launch at 6500-7000 with the new setup.

They will even break at stock power levels with sticky tires.

I hear this often, and across multiple platforms, so I don't doubt its validity.. I'm not looking for "It will" I'm looking for "It did"

Just re-read what I typed-Sounded like an a$$, sorry didn't mean to.

Hey man,

I figured I would chime in here since we know about this all too well!

To be completely honest, a sticky tire even in a bone stock 15' has the chance to break the half-shafts.

We shattered ours with bolt ons right here:

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions!

"sticky tire"....does that mean that these shafts will break with a 19" drag radial on the street launching at 3k-3500 rpm's? Seems like everything I have read/come across is the half shafts breaking on a slick (until I read this thread) and on the drag strip NOT on the street?

Drag Radials are usually harder on the shafts because the stiffer sidewall doesn't flex. It creates small amounts of wheel hop which is a shaft killer.

Ford Performance Racing says yes, it's a must have.

If all I need is a set of sticky tires and a hard enough pull that I snap a half shaft or both, I wish Ford would have thought and tested that component a little more. Mustang drivers and minor Modding have always gone together.

With this being one of the cars that gets the most Modding from owners, they should have given us a higher failure limit on the stock half shafts.

I hope they beef them up a bit for 2016. It should take more than sticky tires or CAI + tune to snap something that important.

The Ford rep in the video below even says for those of you putting on sticky tires and drag race or increase power.

For a look at a comparison stock vs upgrade, click here for the video from Ford.

It's highly unlikely that Ford will upgrade the half shafts for 2016. They aren't in the business of making the cars ready for racing applications, since most people really don't do that.

If they haven't issued a TSB then I doubt 2016s will be upgraded.

Sounds like the verdict then is Yes. Half shaft upgrades are a good idea if sticky tires or more power is planned and the car will be pushed hard.

Probably over a year from now for me but I'll have to add them to the list of must do mods where more power is involved.

It would be really nice if you could even get them! With the issues of the loctite on early shipped axles combined with Roush and Shelby hogging up most of them since, it's almost impossible to get any. I have had a set on order since February.
