In the time since you posted this, almost 200 posts ago, I sold my Tacoma, ordered a Mach 1, decided I did not want to wait 90+ days and the $10k+ extra I would be paying is probably a waste of money for me, cancelled that order, started shopping around and bought a car 2 days ago.

Granted, my budget is not as restricted as yours, but still.... decide what your parameters are and go get a car. They are out there.
I can relate to the OP in the sense that I've been "window shopping" Mustangs since 2012, and finally had my finances and the right car line up in Feb 2021.
My decision included searches that led to lurking on forums, and when I finally knew the right mechanic I asked him a lot of questions.
(Asking him about Corvettes could lead to "it's a piece of šŸ’©" and "you should get one" in back-to-back sentences. šŸ˜†)

In my case, I suppose patience and being broke went well together. šŸ˜…

said he might be able to get it to 49,000 OTD, but that would be the best that he could do. He really wants to get it off the lot...
that's total rubbish! if he REALLY WANTS to move it he'll price it at 41+TTL or lower. Or in OTD terms 45 tops. If you don't care about getting the best deal I would pitch him 45,425 out the door.

"If you want to sell that car to me, today, right now, the price is $45,425 OTD".

This guy just called me back and said he might be able to get it to 49,000 OTD, but that would be the best that he could do. He really wants to get it off the lot.......
If he "REALLY" wants the car off the lot then your start price should be no lower than $45,648 (10% off MSRP). Then you have your rebates. What do you qualify for? I think you should get all $3k. That brings the car down to $42,648. Now add the tax, license & registration, fee's etc. to get to your OTD door price. Bet it's no where near $49k. They are playing with you because they know you cannot make up your mind. Once you get serious a deal may be forthcoming.

They have all the power, you want the car, they will sell the car to someone, they are expecting you to buy it, as you already on the fence.

me, id throw numbers out. I dont know taxation. lets go half the distance, and say 47k OTD. from the 42k but less than 49k. if you are on the fence on 49, you should be happier with 46k-47k

be like thats my final offer, thats everything. or im looking elsewhere.

they will sell it, or lose a sale and have to wait for next guy

I got the car last august for $42.5k before tax and license. Msrp was $48865 plus dealer adds on like tint window , wheel locks, etc sticker price little over $51k.

you need to negotiate better than that. Why are you letting the dealership dictate the price?? You are the buyer, are you that desperate for the car.? It’s ok to walk away cause you rather walk away than getting screwed.

exactly. dont spend more than you are comfortable doing, they aren't losing money on that car, you can be sure of that. they are just being turds.

No car salesman is taking OP seriously (Just read this 233 post thread). He shows no negotiation skills and is unable to decide what he wants. I know it’s harsh but it is what it is. So he either gets his act together or he’s going to get screwed. You can lead a horse to water..........

When you give them a hard bargain, you know they will take you more serious. You have to be firm. They always tell you they are losing money selling you at that price. However, I never seen a dealership going out of business because they sell a bunch of cars at a lost profit. They always make money. How much they make is depending who are the suckers.

@$49k for the car in the link above... w-a-l-k.

Don’t let emotions get in the way of your hard earned money, be it cash OR having to pay for it in loan installments.

$49k isn’t a bargain on that vehicle.

Hit up cargurus, search new and do Nationwide radius. You’re going to find similar equipped S550’s for less... and cargurus will show you if deals are spot on fair or too damn high without any guessing needed.

If you’re going to go in on any new or used vehicle at any Dealership, you best have a poker face AND already know your dead set limit on what you will pay OTD... not what you will pay PLUS all their damn fees, taxes, doc fees, etc... you bargain hard with a total OTD price you will pay. If they don’t like it, leave.

Take it easy. I talked to the dealer last week and told him my price was 46. He said there is no chance he could do that and after it was apparent he didn’t want to budge I said see you later. 49 was his offer on his call to me and again I said that’s not my number told him to call me when he was ready to sell the car.

When I bought my 10 camaro. That is exactly what I did. I test drove it in December. They wanted like 5k over sticker or more....don't remember all the particulars. Told them what I was willing to pay. They said no. I told them ill check back with them and see if they are ready to sell. I went back about every 2 weeks....my car was still there. They would talk to me, and every time they would come down on the price, I stayed furm with what I would pay, and told them to call me when they were ready to sell. Finally in March they called me and told me to come and get my car.

Alright then, apologies. You didn’t tell us that. Unfortunately it’s a sellers market and dealers are standing their ground. That said there’s a car out there for you at the right price. Keep searching as the market is only going to get worse.

It seems in today’s market that strategy isn’t going to work. Dealers know that new stock isn’t coming due to the chip shortage. So they are looking to squeeze every dollar out of what they have. If someone wants a car now, they better get moving.

No worries Bikeman. You've been really helpful and i don't mind a little healthy criticism.
