The ECU is tuned to run 87-93 octane. Based on octane, the ECU has the capability to advance timing closer to maximum theoretical torque until the knock sensors indicate pre-ignition or detonation. Running higher octane fuel will allow for higher cylinder pressures and temps before the gas ignites.
The real question is if you care about losing ~10hp for running 87 octane.
