Water leaking under left muffler?

So I have an ecoboost and noticed that the left muffler always drips water when I park the car. The right muffler doesn't, and I smelled the liquid and it has no smell. Is this anything to be concerned of?

Are you making very short trips where the engine doesn't have time to warm up to operating temperature? Is it parked outside in the rain? All exhaust systems kick out a little water. I'd say its just normal but keep an eye on it.

I would assume it is condensation build up in the mufflers. Odd that one would be leaking and the other is not.

I have a Roush AB on my '15GT and there are tiny, tiny holes drilled in each muffler to let the water/condensation drip out. Not sure if the factory mufflers do this or not. Might take a look and see if there are any tiny holes.

As it's still winter I wait for the engine block to warm to 100f and for the idle rpm's to drop to below 1000 before driving the car, but yes I am driving 1-2 miles and then back (to the gym).

I consider that normal. A byproduct of gasoline combustion is water vapor. As it travels down the exhaust system the water will condense as water especially when you park. Mufflers have weep holes specifically to drain this condensation.

I put the FRPP exhaust on mine for a couple weeks, then took it off. The FRPP doesn't have drain holes and they were FULL OF WATER...AND I MEAN FULL. Watch the GT350 video where the guy gets a pant leg spray of water when the active exhaust side opens up. This is normal. Luckily the factory exhaust has drain holes.

I wonder is that part of the reason the old glass packs would rust so fast. Other than being cheap metal.

I think the cheap metal is the reason. I still have parts of my original 2011 exhaust on with only light surface rust, but had a Magnaflow system that was covered in surface rust within a year. My Borlas are still completely rust free after about two years.

i get the same thing, perfectly normal.

as one noted, keep an eye on it, specificallt your coolant levels. if it doest have a smell its probably not burnt antifreeze but just water!

It's very unlikely to be coolant unless you've noted other symptoms (such as running hot or coolant in the oil).

Every gallon of gasoline you burn generates about a gallon and a half of water vapor, which will condense on every square inch of metal on the inside of your exhaust system until they have warmed up enough to prevent it. Obviously this is part of the reason for older exhaust systems having short lives.


OP - the left side may be sitting lower where you park or have a different "low spot", the right side may be running warmer (might even be running leaner) or may have a plugged weep hole.

Any split dual exhaust will have one side that is more active than the other, it's just the curse of a single to dual system, the more active exhaust is going to condense more water and drip more. As it was said above water from the exhaust is normal, give it a good redline and blow it out once in a while. Also remember that turbo cars will have slower exhaust speed since the turbo is taking a ton of energy from the exhaust gasses and thus the condense faster. All normal just keep rockin it!

I'll try to snap a picture today. Basically drilled them on the bottom of the muffler toward the front.


Here's a photo I found online that is pretty much the same as mine. I think this guy drilled on the front face but I drilled on the bottom of the muffler in the same general location.
