If it get's that bad, I'm hopping in my wife's Trailblazer with the studded winter tires on it. It's never failed me yet [emoji106]
Winter tires are far better than an all season on cold dry, cold wet, icy and snow covered roads. All seasons are only marginally better than a summer tire once the temp goes below freezing.

Look at the OP's location. Obviously different areas of the country see different weather during the winter, and in the PNW we have lots of rainy days in the 30s and 40s during the winter. It does get below freezing here, but many times those are just overnight lows and the days will see the higher 30 and 40 degree temps. Nobody is arguing that an all-season is as good as a winter tire in below-freezing weather or in the snow, but you can't ignore the fact that winter driving in the PNW is far more likely to be on a wet 40 degree road than an ice covered road in the 20s.

i had some conti all season which were pretty good in snow on my old subbie. so depends on which all seasons you get. on the stang, the pirelli all seasons sucked in anything below 60 degrees. i switched to winter tires and they are way better than all of them haha.

I ordered a set of the BFGoodrich Comp 2 A/S Their customer reviews are even better than the Continentals by a small margin. My car is used as a daily driver and the cold is already noticeably affecting the traction. I rarely have to drive in snow or ice, so winter tires don't make sense for me. Price was surprisingly reasonable.

Just put on a set of SportComp2's (summer) 1k ago. Much improved over the Pirelli's. Driven to work the last two mornings at 5:30 a.m. with temp varying from 31-34° on my 25 mile ride in. Stone cold, take it easy. BUT... they warm up pretty quick, and I've had no problems. Much better in the rain too. Co-worker has them on 2011 GT and runs them all year 'round.

All the Pirelli's are good for is takin' up space in my garage. Squirrely in the rain too. The Pirelli's must have been another "Better Idea" from Ford on PP Mustangs. GeeZus!

Your mileage may vary. :D

Well, the big thing that all season tires have over summer only tires is that they have rubber compounds in them that actually stay soft enough to create traction down to some fairly low temperatures...however, they aren't engineered to provide optimal traction in snow and/or ice (unlike dedicated snow tires). An M+S (Mud and snow) rating on an all season tire means that it has been tested by someone somewhere (don't know who off the top of my head) and found to produce adequate traction in snow. And I have no doubt that snow tires work 100% better than an all season in the snow-I've done some pretty nasty winter driving by necessity around here (and bought snow tires for my daily driver back then because of it). Remember the winter of '08 around Christmas up here? ;) Fortunately, that is much more the exception than the norm in the Pacific NW...but snow tires will let you drive the mountain passes and up to the ski areas in the winter. Not brave enough to try that in my RWD 'stang, though...

Thought you guys down there had to put out smudge pots in the orange fields every once in a while so guys like me could enjoy a glass of orange juice in the middle of winter :hail:

Oh yeah, and one should not launch space shuttles when the weather gets too cold, or bad things happen...;)

Forget all-seasons...they really are "no seasons" because they excel at nothing. Car and Driver just did an article on the best winter tires per their reviews.
Id be interested to see what they claim is good. I know whats gopd but id read that out of curiosity. Any link to that winter test?

I would say all seasons are way better than a marginal improvement over summer tires in the cold and snow. Dunlop summers on my Mazdaspeed 3 were horrible in cold. My pirellis were horrible in the cold. Good all seasons will still work quite well in light snow and last way longer doing it. I am sure snow tires are better, however the 5 days of snow we get in a year and mild winters don't really justify getting them.

I just got back from the tire shop a few hours ago. I had a set of DWS06 installed on my PP wheels, and I'll be picking up a set of summer tires for better wheels in the spring. I don't plan to drive my Mustang in the snow and the DWS06 should be great for the normal 30-40ish degree Pacific Northwest winters where it's mostly just cold and wet. The stock Pirellis were horrid as soon as the temperatures dropped.
My GT w/PP is being delivered next week and I'm ordering a set of DWS06s to get installed. With the cold here in Seattle over the last week I don't think I want to drive the car from Kent to Bellevue (home) on the P Zeros.

Don't confuse snow tires as only being good in snow. They are designed for low temps and have an added benefit of working well in snow/ice conditions.
