I hope it works out for the OP but I just have to say WTF is it with people tuning cars and then selling/trading them in with low miles? Makes no sense to me but I see the issue come up with used Mustangs on here constantly. (Goes to hug my bought new and still unmolested GT.)

It is kinda odd, especially if the previous owner had the ability to remove the tune prior to selling/trading. I can’t even guess the frame of mind- other than “screw the dealer and the next owner isn’t my problem.”

I also know the pressure at dealers to take delivery quickly when you trade; but he could have said it was tuned and bring the tuner to the dealer later. I dunno 🤷‍♂️

Ford being unable to communicate with the car indicates a larger failure than a tune. Ford can reflash a car that's been tuned.

I'd definitely want the dealer who sold the car to me to make this right.

The Acura dealer's latest (Friday Afternoon) suggestion is bring the car back and trade it for another Mustang. Sales Mgr said they had four offers on this car and one sale person supposedly mistakenly took a deposit on the vehicle while I was in the process of buying it. SMH I don't know the full details of course; but apparently they are fending off another pissed off customer related to this vehicle and wouldn't mind getting it back. However, they didn't say they would buy it back and make us whole. They want me to buy a different vehicle, yet they don't have another 6sp Mustang GT Premium Vert. Then on top of that, the Mgr says we have no way of checking for software mods so it's not our fault; but we want you to be happy... I reached out to the local bar association for a referral. First consultation, through their referral system is only $50 for 30 minutes. Then, I'll decide where to go from there...

Chances are somebody loaded a tune that scrambled the calibration ID. This keeps the dealer from being able to communicate with it since it bases its communication on that calibration ID. Anybody experienced with these PCMs could help you get a factory calibration flashed back into it, and nobody would have any concerns.

Is This a dealer only endeavor or could a tuner somewhere help flash back to stock?

It would be best if a tuner could do it because if a dealer has to do it then it would show up in any dealers OASIS system or IDS/FRDS as having been performed.

OP, you may want to contact PCMtec here on the forum. They are a vendor that specializes in ford PCMs.

It appears that PCMtec is an Australian company, so not sure if they can assist me here in the US, but I will shot them an email to iquire.

They can help you. I am dealing with them on an issue right now where the tune on my car is scrambled when read. They are very responsive via email, the only issue is the time difference, but it'll work out.

Are you sure there are not aftermarket parts on the car that will make the stock tune useless?

No, I am not sure. Airbox is stock, didn’t check throttle body closely but looks stock.
Based on carfax, previous owner had it about 4-5 months before trading it at a MB dealer. So not sure what state of mind the owner was in when traded.

any tips on other common upgrades I should try to find on the car?

9.9 out of 10 dealer techs will never figure out how to do it as they rely on the car to tell the system what it is. your car is lying about what it is, and it takes a relatively competent tech to work around this. Not something you want to blindly roll up to a dealer to get done, more-so something you want to ask around about locally to find 'the guy'.
There are also 3rd party guys who are familiar with your situation that would either have you ship the pcm to them or they may be able to provide a remote service.

I have downloaded the as built file from the motorcraft site, purchased the PCMTec software, and ordered the proper hardware OBD2 link. I will continue to read the notes in the PCMTec forum and study the user manual for the software until the hardware arrives. I'm optimistic I can reflash back to stock and then see what happens. If it doesn't work, I will revert back to the original tune and seek additional assistance. All in, it is about the same price as paying a dealer, and as MKL-DS said: there are no guarantees at the dealer....

I had a similar experience. I bought my car used and it apparently had a tune on it when I went in for repairs. Their computers couldn’t connect to the car. They took out the PCM or ECU and gave it to one of their specialist to load a stock tube. Took about a week. It cost me a pretty penny. Don’t remember how much.
